Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, October 29, 2023

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Congratulations to the many young people from our parish who received the Sacrament of Confirmation yesterday and Friday! We are excited to see what the Holy Spirit begins to do in their lives through this new outpouring of His grace. We are thankful to their parents and godparents and all who have been witnesses to them of the Catholic faith, as well as the many catechists and teachers who have assisted them in their religious formation.

We are also grateful to Bishop McClory of Gary, Indiana for coming to confirm them since Bishop Rhoades is in Rome representing the United States at the Synod of Bishops.

Today we are asking young men from our parish to consider serving at the altar. Boys and young men who are currently in middle school, junior high, high school, or college are particularly encouraged to consider this opportunity to serve the Lord at the altar. Please encourage your sons or grandsons to consider serving the Lord as an altar server.

This week we celebrate All Saints Day, a holy day of obligation. The following day, All Souls Day (or the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed) gives us the chance to pray for all the souls in purgatory, especially those who have died in the past year. While November 2 is not a day of obligation, we will have Mass at 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. in English and 7:00 p.m. in Spanish, all of which will be sung Masses in the manner of a Sunday Mass. Please join us for this beautiful opportunity to pray for our departed friends, loved ones, and all have gone before us marked with the sign of faith.

We are making progress toward our goal for the Annual Bishop’s Appeal! Thank you to everyone who has already submitted your pledge, and for those who have not, thank you for prayerfully considering the way that the Lord is calling you to sacrificial generosity in support of the local Church. The Annual Bishop’s Appeal is critical for the financial health not only of our Diocese but also of our parish. After receiving the final results from last year’s Appeal, we met and exceeded our goal by a substantial amount. The amount contributed above our goal supported the renovation of our new parish office building, which will be opening soon. If everyone works together, we will have no problem doing so again. Our most important target is to have 100% participation!

Recent read: African Founders: How enslaved people expanded American ideals by David Hackett Fischer. This book explores how the regional origins of descendants of African slaves in the United States and the way that American culture was impacted by the diversity therein. It is broadly an ethnological history of African slavery in the United States and was extremely informative (and, of course, at times quite chilling).

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

¡Felicidades a todos los jóvenes de nuestra parroquia que recibieron el Sacramento de la Confirmación ayer y el viernes! Estamos emocionados de ver lo que el Espíritu Santo comienza a hacer en sus vidas a través de este nuevo derramamiento de Su gracia. Agradecemos a sus padres y padrinos y a todos los que les han dado testimonio de la fe católica, así como a los catequistas y profesores que les han ayudado en su formación religiosa.

También estamos agradecidos el Mons. McClory, Obispo de Gary, Indiana, por venir a confirmarlos ya que el Obispo Rhoades está en Roma representando a los Estados Unidos en el Sínodo de los Obispos.

Hoy estamos pidiendo a los jóvenes de nuestra parroquia que consideren servir en el altar. Los niños y jóvenes que actualmente están en la escuela intermedia, secundaria, preparatoria o universidad son se les anima a considerar esta oportunidad de servir al Señor en el altar. Por favor anime a sus hijos o nietos a considerar servir al Señor como un servidor de altar.

Esta semana celebramos el Día de Todos los Santos, un día santo de obligación. Al día siguiente, el Día de Todos los Fieles Difuntos (o la Conmemoración de todos los fieles difuntos) nos da la oportunidad de orar por todas las almas en el purgatorio, especialmente por aquellos que han muerto en el último año. Si bien el 2 de noviembre no es un día obligación, pero tendremos misa a las 8:00 a.m. y 5:30 p.m. en inglés y a las 7:00 p.m. en español, todas las cuales serán misas cantadas a la manera de una misa dominical. Únase a nosotros en esta hermosa oportunidad de orar por nuestros amigos fallecidos, seres queridos y todos los que se han ido marcados con el signo de la fe.

Gracias a todos los que ya han presentado su promesa, y los que no lo han hecho, gracias por considerar en oración la manera en el que el Señor los está llamando a la generosidad sacrificial en apoyo de la Iglesia local. La Apelación Anual del Obispo es fundamental para la salud financiera no solo de nuestra Diócesis sino también de nuestra parroquia. Después de recibir los resultados finales de la Apelación del año pasado, cumplimos y superamos nuestra meta por primera vez en muchos años. La cantidad aportada por encima de nuestra meta apoyó la renovación de nuestro nuevo edificio de oficinas parroquiales, que se abrirá pronto. Si todos trabajan juntos, no tendremos ningún problema en hacerlo de nuevo. ¡Nuestro objetivo más importante es tener el 100% de participación! Todos tenemos un papel que desempeñar en el apoyo a nuestra Iglesia.
