Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, November 26, 2023

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Happy Thanksgiving! Welcome home to everyone visiting family this weekend, and safe travels to everyone who will be heading back to many different places. It is a joy to see family and friends, and most importantly, to give thanks to God together, especially through the Sacrifice of Thanksgiving – the Holy Mass.

We announced at Mass last Sunday that our Director of Sacred Music, Mr. James Richardson, will be leaving us in January to take up a new post at the Cathedral of St. Augustine in Kalamazoo, Michigan. When we hired James five and a half years ago, we knew that he was a man of exceptional talent who would eventually be highly sought after. It has been a great joy for me to guide him in his first full time church music post, and it has been an even greater joy for our parish to be the beneficiaries of his considerable talents as an organist, singer, and director (among many other talents as well). More importantly, he is a man of deep Catholic faith who has inspired us to delve more deeply into our Catholic tradition and model our choices in sacred music on the Church’s own desires for how we are to worship the most high God. We are sad to lose such a dedicated member of our community who has done such transformational work in our parish under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, but Christian charity moves us to desire the best for him, and I am excited for him to have this opportunity to bring the great work he has done at St. John the Evangelist to an even broader community in the Diocese of Kalamazoo through his work at their cathedral. Mr. Richardson’s last Sunday with us will be the Solemnity of the Epiphany – January 7, 2024.

You might remember from last summer that I attended the episcopal consecration and installation of the new bishop of Kalamazoo, who was my spiritual director for five years in the seminary. I owe him more than I can put into words for his guidance of my vocation, and if it weren’t for him your pastor might very well not be a priest. So maybe now we’re even!

We are committed to finding a new Director of Sacred Music who can continue the transformational work that Mr. Richardson and the volunteers in our music program have undertaken these past five years. We never imagined that we would find him, so we should not despair of being able to find and attract a new director as well. A search committee is already assisting me in this important task, which will be at the top of my priorities. What we need most of all at this time are your prayers and sacrifices for this important cause. Ask our Blessed Mother; our patron, St. John; the patron saints of sacred music, Ss. Gregory and Cecilia, and all your other heavenly best friends to assist us in this cause as well.

This is the last call for your help in achieving our goal for the Annual Bishop’s Appeal! If you have been procrastinating making your pledge, please help your pastor, business manager, and finance council to cease their sleepless nights of worrying about reaching our goal. If you are still hesitating about whether or not to give, please talk to us about your concerns.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

¡Feliz Día de Acción de Gracias! Bienvenido a casa a todos los que visitan a la familia este fin de semana, y buen viaje a todos los que regresarán a los diferentes lugares. Es una alegría ver a familias y amigos, y lo más importante, dar gracias a Dios juntos, especialmente a través del sacrificio de Acción de Gracias – la Santa Misa.

El domingo pasado anunciamos en la Misa que el Director de Música Sagrada, el Sr. James Richardson, se ira en enero para ocupar un nuevo puesto en la Catedral de San Agustín en Kalamazoo, Michigan. Cuando contratamos a James hace cinco años y medio, sabíamos que era un hombre de talento excepcional que eventualmente sería muy buscado. Ha sido una gran alegría para mí guiarlo en su primer puesto de tiempo completo de música de la iglesia, y ha sido una alegría aún mayor para la parroquia ser los beneficiarios de sus considerables talentos como organista, cantante y director (entre muchos otros talentos también). Más importante aún, él es un hombre de profunda fe católica que nos ha inspirado a profundizar más nuestra tradición católica y modelar nuestras elecciones en música sagrada en los propios deseos de la Iglesia de cómo debemos adorar al Dios Altísimo. Nos entristece perder a un miembro tan dedicado de nuestra comunidad que ha hecho un trabajo tan transformador en la parroquia bajo la guía del Espíritu Santo, pero la caridad cristiana nos mueve a desear lo mejor para él, y estoy emocionado de que tenga esta oportunidad de llevar el gran trabajo que ha hecho en San Juan Evangelista a una comunidad aún más amplia en la Diócesis de Kalamazoo a través de su trabajo en su catedral. El último domingo del Sr. Richardson con nosotros será la Solemnidad de la Epifanía, el 7 de enero de 2024.

Tal vez recuerden que el verano pasado asistí a la consagración episcopal y a la instalación del nuevo obispo de Kalamazoo, que fue mi director espiritual durante cinco años en el seminario. Le debo más de lo que puedo expresar con palabras por su guía de mi vocación, y si no fuera por él, su pastor podría muy bien no ser sacerdote. ¡Así que tal vez ahora estemos a mano!

Estamos comprometidos a encontrar un nuevo Director de Música Sagrada que pueda continuar el trabajo transformador que el Sr. Richardson y los voluntarios de nuestro programa de música han emprendido estos últimos cinco años. Nunca imaginamos que lo encontraríamos, así que no debemos desesperarnos de poder encontrar y atraer a un nuevo director también. Un comité de búsqueda ya me está ayudando en esta importante tarea, que será una de mis prioridades. Lo que más necesitamos en este momento son sus oraciones y sacrificios por esta importante causa. Pídale a nuestra Santísima Madre; a nuestro patrón, San Juan; a los santos patronos de la música sacra, San Gregorio y Santa Cecilia, y a todos sus otros mejores amigos celestiales para ayudarnos también en esta causa.

¡Este es el último llamado para su ayuda en el logro de nuestra meta para la Apelación Anual del Obispo! Si usted ha estado postergando hacer su promesa, por favor ayude a su pastor, gerente de negocios, y consejo de finanzas a cesar sus noches de insomnio de preocuparse por alcanzar nuestra meta.
