Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, March 6th

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Lent is finally here! Our parish Lenten series begins Tuesday, March 8th at 6 p.m. The Spanish track starts with Holy Mass in the church at the English track with a soup supper in the church basement. Our theme this year is “Living the Holy Mass.” The theme for our first week is “The Mass and Conversion.” We will learn how the Mass converts our hearts to the Lord and how we can live this theme of conversion in our everyday lives. Future sessions will focus on: The Mass as a Sacrifice that Helps us to Love, The Mass as Encounter with Christ Risen from the Dead and Coming at the End of Time, and The Mass as the Nuptial Banquet.

As we announced last Sunday, at our daily Masses (8 a.m. and 6 p.m.) we have taken up a new spiritual practice whose goal is to place God more at the center of our worship. During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the priest now uses the traditional posture of prayer at the altar, which is to stand on the same side of the altar as the congregation. The goal of the restoration of this traditional liturgical posture is to help all of us to focus more intently on God at Mass, rather than the personality of the individual priest. We have already shared a lot of information on this practice, but I will continue to answer one question about it each week for the next few weeks:

Objection: I can't see what's happening.

Response: This is certainly correct, though not for the reason you think. No one can see what is happening at the altar, not even the priest who holds the Host and Chalice in his hands. Mass ad orientem reminds us that what is happening at the Mass is a mystery that requires faith to apprehend and receive. We believe in Christ's presence in the Eucharist because of the testimony of faithful witnesses who saw and heard what we cannot not see and hear.

The priests of our Diocese will attend a Lenten Day of Recollection on Wednesday. Please pray that we will be moved to a deeper encounter with Christ in order to lead the faithful closer to Him!

I am excited for the renewed commitment to our parish that you have expressed by your participation. For those still prayerfully considering how God is calling you to sacrificial generosity through our parish in the coming year, you can place your card in the offertory basket at Mass or bring it to the parish office. Better yet, you can fill it out online at our website: stjohncatholic.com! As we announced last week, in appreciation of all those who are sacrificially supporting our parish, we will no longer ask for fees for parish services for those who make a commitment to this campaign and are faithful to that commitment. This will be especially relevant as we look forward to registrations for religious education soon!

Recent Read: Schindler’s List by Thomas Keneally. Yes, it is a book, not just a movie! This is a deeply moving story about a very imperfect person striving to live justly (at least in one respect) in extremely trying circumstances.

¡La Cuaresma finalmente está aquí! Los Ejercicios Espirituales de Cuaresma comienzan el martes 8 de marzo a las 6 p.m. Los ejercicios en español comienzan con la Santa Misa en la iglesia y en inglés con una cena de sopa en el sótano de la iglesia. Nuestro tema de este año es "Vivir la Santa Misa". A través de estos ejercicios, descubriremos más sobre la Misa que nos ayudará a profundizar nuestra oración en la Misa y el misterio de este encuentro con Cristo en nuestra vida diaria. Los ejercicios se centrarán en: La Misa como un sacrificio que nos ayuda a amar, la Misa como un encuentro con Cristo resucitado de entre los muertos y que viene al final de los tiempos, y la misa como un banquete nupcial.

El domingo pasado anunciamos que en las Misas diarias (8 a.m. y 6 p.m.) tomaremos una nueva práctica espiritual cuyo objetivo es colocar a Dios más en el centro de nuestra adoración. Durante la Liturgia de la Eucaristía, el sacerdote ahora usa la postura tradicional de oración en el altar, que es estar en el mismo lado del altar que la congregación. El objetivo de la restauración de esta postura litúrgica tradicional es ayudar a todos a centrarnos más intensamente en Dios durante la Misa, en lugar de la personalidad del sacerdote individual. Ya hemos compartido mucha información sobre esta práctica, pero continuaré respondiendo una pregunta al respecto cada semana durante las próximas semanas:

Objeción: No puedo ver lo que está sucediendo.

Respuesta: Esto es ciertamente correcto, aunque no por la razón que piensas. Nadie puede ver lo que está sucediendo en el altar, ni siquiera el sacerdote que sostiene la Hostia y el Cáliz en sus manos. La Misa ad orientem nos recuerda que lo que está sucediendo en la Misa es un misterio que requiere fe para aprehender y recibir. Creemos en la presencia de Cristo en la Eucaristía debido al testimonio de los testigos fieles que vieron y escucharon lo que no podemos ver y oír.

Los sacerdotes de nuestra diócesis asistirán a una Jornada de Recogimiento de Cuaresma el miércoles. ¡Por favor, oren para que seamos conmovidos a un encuentro más profundo con Cristo para llevar a los fieles más cerca de Él!
