Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, March 26th

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today is traditionally known as “Passion Sunday,” which is the beginning of the season of Passiontide, which takes us through the final two weeks of Lent, including Holy Week. You will have noticed that the statues and crucifixes in church were veiled in purple. This is a visual fasting, intensifying the penance of Lent, and serves to focus our attention on the Lord’s Passion. The veiling of the crucifix really makes sense at the Good Friday liturgy when it is dramatically unveiled.

Speaking of Good Friday, I hope that you will make plans to attend the Triduum liturgies on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. These are the three holiest days in the Church’s entire year, in which we celebrate the most sacred mysteries of the Lord’s life. Our parish particularly puts a lot of time and energy into preparing beautiful liturgies for the Sacred Paschal Triduum, and I am sure that if you make the time to take part in these moving celebrations you will not regret it.

This week is the last session of our Lenten series: “Overcoming the Vice of Sloth: How Christ wants to redeem your spiritual burnout.” We are now in the fun part: the joyful remedies we can employ against the vice of sloth. Even if you didn’t make it to our first four sessions, we hope you’ll join us this Tuesday at 6 p.m. as we learn about overcoming this obstacle to Christian holiness. We have had our best turn out ever for our Lenten series this year!

Lenten confession count, as of Tuesday, March 21st: 210.

Our parish school is accepting registrations for pre-school through 6th grade. We have openings in all grades and would love for even more of our parishioners to take advantage of the incredible opportunity we have for a Catholic education for our children. The Indiana School Choice Scholarships make this opportunity very affordable, and pending legislations will hopefully help even more families qualify for those scholarships this year.

This week, amidst many other activities, I look forward to giving a presentation on medical morality to the recently-ordained priests.

Recent read: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers by J. R. R. Tolkien. Continuing my re-read of this favorite classic, in this volume I particularly appreciated the nobleness of Aragorn and the dignity of the hobbits.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo

Hoy es el día tradicionalmente conocido como "Domingo de la Pasión", que es el comienzo de la temporada de la Pasióntide, que nos lleva a través de las dos últimas semanas de Cuaresma, incluyendo la Semana Santa. Habrá observado que las estatuas y los crucifijos de la iglesia estaban cubiertos con un velo morado. Se trata de un acto de abstinencia visual, que intensifica la penitencia de la Cuaresma y sirve para centrar nuestra atención en la Pasión del Señor. El velado del crucifijo cobra realmente sentido en la liturgia del Viernes Santo, cuando se descubre dramáticamente.

Hablando del Viernes Santo, espero que haga planes para asistir a las liturgias del Triduo el Jueves Santo, el Viernes Santo y el Sábado Santo. Son los tres días más sagrados de todo el año de la Iglesia, en los que celebramos los misterios más sagrados de la vida del Señor. Nuestra parroquia dedica especialmente mucho tiempo y energía a preparar hermosas liturgias para el Triduo Pascual Sagrado, y estoy seguro de que si saca tiempo para participar en estas emotivas celebraciones, no se arrepentirá.

Esta semana es la última sesión de nuestra serie de Cuaresma: "Vencer el vicio de la pereza: cómo Cristo quiere redimir su agotamiento espiritual". Ahora estamos en la parte divertida: los alegres remedios que podemos emplear contra el vicio de la pereza. Aunque no haya asistido a nuestras cuatro primeras sesiones, esperamos que se una a nosotros este martes a las 6 de la tarde mientras aprendemos a superar este obstáculo para la santidad cristiana. Este año hemos tenido la mejor asistencia de nuestra serie de Cuaresma.

Nuestra escuela de la parroquia está aceptando inscripciones desde preescolar hasta 6º grado. Tenemos cupo en todos los grados y nos encantaría que más de nuestros feligreses aprovecharan la increíble oportunidad que tenemos de una educación católica para nuestros hijos. Las Becas de Indiana School Choice hacen que esta oportunidad sea muy accesible, y es de esperar que las legislaciones pendientes ayuden a que aún más familias puedan optar a esas becas este año.

Esta semana, entre otras muchas actividades, espero dar una presentación sobre moralidad médica a los sacerdotes recién ordenados.
