Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, March 20, 2022

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our parish Lenten series continues Tuesday, at 6 p.m. The Spanish track starts with Holy Mass in the church at the English track with a soup supper in the church basement. Our theme this year is “Living the Holy Mass.” The theme for our third week is “The Mass as the Encounter with the Risen Lord.” Our final session next week will focus on: The Mass as the Nuptial Banquet. Don’t forget that childcare is available for this event!

We continue our series on why at our daily Masses the priest has taken up the traditional posture of facing the same direction as the congregation for the Liturgy of the Eucharist:

Objection: Surely the first Christians didn’t pray like this.

Response: At best, we try to reconstruct what the early Church may (but given limitations, may not!) have done. By the way, the idea that we should only model what we do after the early Church was given a name -- antiquarianism -- and was condemned by Pope Pius XII in his encyclical ‘Mediator Dei’. As Catholics, we see development within the Church’s history, guided by the Holy Spirit, as a welcome gift. As it is, we do know for a fact that Mass versus Deum / facing God together became the norm very early in our history and remained the norm until about 1970.

Recent Read: Kristin Lavransdatter II: The wife by Sigrid Undset. This is the second volume in the masterpiece of Sigrid Undset, a Norwegian convert to Catholicism in the 20th Century who meticulously researched Catholic life in medieval Norway to serve as the background for the beautiful and tragic story of what deserves to be known as one of the great female protagonists of world literature (way better than Scarlet O’Hara, in my opinion).

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Los Ejercicios Espirituales de Cuaresma en nuestra parroquia continúa el martes 8 de marzo a las 6 p.m. Los ejercicios en español comienzan con la Santa Misa en la iglesia y en inglés con una cena de sopa en el sótano de la iglesia. Nuestro tema de este año es "Vivir la Santa Misa". A través de estos ejercicios, descubriremos más sobre la Misa que nos ayudará a profundizar nuestra oración en la Misa y el misterio de este encuentro con Cristo en nuestra vida diaria. Los ejercicios se centrarán en: La Misa como un sacrificio que nos ayuda a amar, la Misa como un encuentro con Cristo resucitado de entre los muertos y que viene al final de los tiempos, y la misa como un banquete nupcial.

Continuamos nuestra serie sobre por qué en las Misas diarias el sacerdote ha adoptado la postura tradicional de mirar en la misma dirección que el pueblo para la Liturgia de la Eucaristía:

Objeción: Se supone que la Misa es la Última Cena, entonces esto es una locura. ¡Jesús no se habría volteado (dando la espalda) a los Apóstoles cuando instituyó la Eucaristía!

Respuesta: Mientras que el Sacramento de la Sagrada Eucaristía fue instituido en la Última Cena, el Santo Sacrificio de la Misa no es una representación sólo de la Última Cena, sino, más bien, de todo el Misterio Pascual de Cristo, incluyendo el del sacrificio de Jesús en el Calvario: el sacrificio de su vida, por nuestros pecados, ofrecido a Dios el Padre. Una orientación común del pueblo cristiano en la Misa en realidad refleja mejor esta verdad, ya que todos estamos participando y ofreciendo al Padre este sacrificio juntos: personas y sacerdotes.
