Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, March 19th

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This week is the second-to-last session of our Lenten series: “Overcoming the Vice of Sloth: How Christ wants to redeem your spiritual burnout.” We are now in the fun part: the joyful remedies we can employ against the vice of sloth. Even if you didn’t make it to our first three sessions, we hope you’ll join us this Tuesday at 6 p.m. as we learn about overcoming this obstacle to Christian holiness. We have had our best turn out ever for our Lenten series this year!

This is the last week for you to turn in your commitments for Proclaiming His Truth, Hope, and Glory, this year’s edition of our yearly chance to renew our commitment to sacrificial generosity in support of our parish. A reminder that one incentive for making a commitment to this program and being faithful to it by supporting our parish regularly through offertory envelopes or online giving is that we do not charge fees for parish services (such as religious education) for those who make a commitment and are faithful to it.

Today, March 19th, is normally the Solemnity of St. Joseph, the spouse of the Blessed Virgin and patron of the Universal Church. This year, his solemnity is transferred to tomorrow, March 20th. Take a break from your Lenten observances tomorrow to celebrate his feast day and the other Christian fathers in your life. I will be celebrating by making some traditional Italian pastries that are specifically made each year on St. Joseph’s Day – le beignet di San Giuseppe.

Another cause for celebration this week is the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary this Saturday, March 25th. On this date, exactly nine months before Christmas, we commemorate Christ’s Incarnation in the womb of Mary as She said “yes!” to the Lord’s invitation to be the Mother of God. We will have Mass on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. in English for the feast day.

Lenten confession count, as of Tuesday, March 14th: 163. Confessions for the Confirmation students last Sunday made a big difference! I look forward to the confessions of our parish school children this week, as well as many other opportunities to celebrate this beautiful sacrament.

Speaking of our parish school, we are accepting registrations for pre-school through 6th grade. We have openings in all grades and would love for even more of our parishioners to take advantage of the incredible opportunity we have for a Catholic education for our children. The Indiana School Choice Scholarships make this opportunity very affordable, and pending legislations will hopefully help even more families qualify for those scholarships this year.

Recent read: The Book of Leviticus. This has the reputation of being one of the least-readable books of the Bible, and while all of the legislation regarding rituals and purity can be tedious, seeing the seriousness with which God legislated to the Israelites regarding divine worship is an important reminder of how seriously we ought to take the right worship of almighty God.

Esta semana en nuestro Camino Cuaresmal: Superar el vicio de la pereza: Cómo Cristo quiere redimir tu agotamiento espiritual,” llegamos a la parte divertida: los remedios alegres que podemos usar contra el vicio de la pereza. Incluso si no asistió a las dos primeras sesiones, esperamos que se una a nosotros este martes a las 6 p.m. mientras aprendemos sobre cómo superar este obstáculo para la santidad cristiana. ¡Este año hemos tenido la mejor participación para el Camino Cuaresmal!

Esta es la última semana para que ustedes entreguen su compromiso para el programa Proclamando Su Verdad, Esperanza y Gloria la edición de este año la oportunidad anual de renovar nuestro compromiso con la generosidad sacrificial en apoyo de nuestra parroquia. Un recordatorio de que un incentivo para comprometerse con este programa y ser fiel apoyando a nuestra parroquia regularmente a través de sobres de ofrendas o donaciones en línea es que no cobramos tarifas por los servicios parroquiales (como la catequesis) para aquellos que hacen un compromiso y son fieles a él.

Normalmente la Solemnidad de San José, el esposo de la Santísima Virgen y patrón de la Iglesia Universal es hoy, 19 de marzo. Este año, su solemnidad se traslada a mañana, 20 de marzo. Mañana tómense un descanso de sus observancias cuaresmales para celebrar su fiesta y los otros padres cristianos en su vida. Yo celebraré haciendo algunos pasteles italianos tradicionales que se hacen específicamente cada año en el día de San José: le beignet di San Giuseppe.

Otro motivo de celebración esta semana es la solemnidad de la Anunciación de la Santísima Virgen María este sábado 25 de marzo. En esta fecha, exactamente nueve meses antes de Navidad, conmemoramos la encarnación de Cristo en el vientre de María cuando Ella dio el "¡sí!" a la invitación del Señor a ser la Madre de Dios. Tendremos Misa el sábado por la mañana a las 8 a.m. en inglés para el día de la fiesta.

Recuento de confesiones de Cuaresma, a partir del martes 14 de marzo: 163. ¡Las confesiones para los estudiantes de Confirmación el domingo pasado hicieron una gran diferencia! Espero con interés las confesiones de nuestros niños de la escuela parroquial esta semana, así como muchas otras oportunidades para celebrar este sacramento hermoso.

Hablando de nuestra escuela parroquial, estamos aceptando inscripciones para preescolar hasta el 6to grado. Tenemos vacantes en todos los grados y nos encantaría que más de nuestros feligreses aprovechen la oportunidad increíble que tenemos para una educación católica para nuestros hijos. La Beca Choice hace que esta oportunidad sea muy asequible, y se espera que las legislaciones pendientes ayuden a más familias a calificar para esas becas este año.
