Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, March 12th

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is already the Third Sunday of Lent! How has your Lent been going? If you still feel like you’re getting started, now is the time to re-commit and take advantage of the time that is left. Live this week of Lent intensely so that you can really enter the rejoicing of Laetare Sunday next week.

This week in our Lenten series: “Overcoming the Vice of Sloth: How Christ wants to redeem your spiritual burnout,” we get to the fun part: the joyful remedies we can employ against the vice of sloth. Even if you didn’t make it to our first two sessions, we hope you’ll join us this Tuesday at 6 p.m. as we learn about overcoming this obstacle to Christian holiness.

Thank you to everyone who has made a commitment so far to Proclaiming His Truth, Hope, and Glory, this year’s edition of our yearly chance to renew our commitment to sacrificial generosity in support of our parish. A reminder that one incentive for making a commitment to this program and being faithful to it by supporting our parish regularly through offertory envelopes or online giving is that we do not charge fees for parish services (such as religious education) for those who make a commitment and are faithful to it.

As of Tuesday, March 7th, I have heard 60 confessions so far during Lent. That’s a little more than a typical week, but not much. Please do not wait until the last minute for your Lenten confessions. We offer 11 confession times each week, which is my way of emphasizing just how important this sacrament is, and how we should be taking advantage of it on a regular basis. Since we have so many regularly scheduled confession times, we do not have penance services anymore. (This is also because, since we are so frequently hearing confessions here at St. John’s, Father Parrish and I are not able to help much with other parishes’ penance services.)

Recent read: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien. Inspired by the (very mediocre) Amazon series on Tolkien’s second age of middle earth, I was inspired to read more of the “ancient history” of Lord of the Rings and then revisit these long-time favorites through that lens. I really gained a new appreciation for Tolkien as an artist and author.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

¡Ya es el tercer domingo de Cuaresma! ¿Cómo le está yendo en su Cuaresma? Si todavía sientes que estás empezando, ahora es el momento de volver a comprometerte y aprovechar el tiempo que te queda. Vive esta semana de Cuaresma intensamente para que realmente pueda entrar en el regocijo del Domingo de Laetare la próxima semana.

Esta semana en nuestro Camino Cuaresmal: Superar el vicio de la pereza: Cómo Cristo quiere redimir tu agotamiento espiritual,” llegamos a la parte divertida: los remedios alegres que podemos emplear contra el vicio de la pereza. Incluso si no asistió a las dos primeras sesiones, esperamos que se una a nosotros este martes a las 6 p.m. mientras aprendemos sobre cómo superar este obstáculo para la santidad cristiana.

Gracias a todos que hasta ahora han hecho un compromiso para el programa Proclamando Su Verdad, Esperanza y Gloria la edición de este año la oportunidad anual de renovar nuestro compromiso con la generosidad sacrificial en apoyo de nuestra parroquia.

Un recordatorio de que un incentivo para comprometerse con este programa y ser fiel a él apoyando a nuestra parroquia regularmente a través de sobres de ofrendas o donaciones en línea es que no cobramos tarifas por los servicios parroquiales (como la catequesis) para aquellos que hacen un compromiso y son fieles a él.

Hasta el martes 7 de marzo, he escuchado 60 confesiones durante la Cuaresma. Eso es un poco más que una semana típica, pero no mucho. Por favor, no esperen hasta el último minuto para sus confesiones de Cuaresma. Ofrecemos 11 confesiones cada semana que es mi manera de enfatizar cuán importante es este sacramento, y cómo debemos aprovecharlo regularmente. Ya que tenemos tantas horas de confesión programadas regularmente, ya no tenemos servicios de penitencia. (Esto también se debe a que, ya que estamos escuchando con tanta frecuencia confesiones aquí en San Juan, el Padre Parrish y yo no podemos ayudar mucho con los servicios penitenciarios de otras parroquias.)
