Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, June 20th

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Thanks to everyone who came out for Fr. José’s going away party last Sunday! What an awesome event for our parish to come together for the first time in quite a while and thank God for the great blessing Fr. José has been to our parish. I particularly pray that there are young men in our parish who have been inspired by his example to consider the possibility of a priestly vocation. Thanks are due to the many people who helped organize the party – especially our pastoral associate, Johnny Evangelista. Different parish apostolates provided food, equipment, and labor for the party. It would not have been possible without you! We are grateful to the city of Goshen for allowing us to close half our block of Monroe Street and to our neighbors for their understanding. (Yet another reason it is so important for us to be good neighbors in return.)

This is Fr. José’s last Sunday with us. His final Mass at St. John’s will be tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. Fr. Logan will arrive tomorrow and will celebrate his first Masses in Spanish and English at 6 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. Tuesday, respectively. It would be great if there were a big crowd here to welcome him! One of the many beautiful things I enjoy so much about our parish is the great attendance we have for daily Mass. A pastor of a parish much bigger than ours recently lamented to me that he has only 8 people at his morning weekday Masses. The next day there were 40 at St. John’s! Are you taking advantage of the opportunities to spend time with the Lord in the Eucharist during the week?

It was great to see more people at Mass last Sunday on the first Sunday with the renewed obligation to attend Holy Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. Welcome back! We have missed you so much and are thrilled that you are here worshiping Christ in the Eucharist with us.

I am away celebrating Father’s Day with my family today. As many of you know, it is my brother’s first time celebrating being a father as he and my sister-in-law expect the birth of their daughter, Lucy Gregerson, next month. Thank you for your prayers for them! We are happy to welcome Fr. Ken Amadi for the 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 11:00 a.m. Sunday Masses today. Fr. Amadi is from Nigeria, is a Ph.D. student at Notre Dame, and is parochial vicar at St. Joseph Parish in Mishawaka. Welcome Fr. Amadi!

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

¡Gracias a todos los que asistieron a la fiesta del P. José el domingo pasado! Fué un evento impresionante para la parroquia el poder reunirse por primera vez en bastante tiempo y dar gracias a Dios por la gran bendición que el P. José ha sido para nuestra parroquia. En particular, ruego que en nuestra parroquia haya jóvenes que se hayan inspirado en su ejemplo para considerar la posibilidad de una vocación sacerdotal. Gracias a todas las personas que ayudaron a organizar la fiesta, especialmente a nuestro asociado pastoral, Johnny Evangelista. Diferentes apostolados parroquiales proporcionaron comida, equipo y mano de obra para el partido. ¡No habría sido posible sin ti! Estamos agradecidos con la ciudad de Goshen por permitirnos cerrar la mitad de la cuadra de Monroe Street y a nuestros vecinos por su comprensión. (Otra razón por la que es muy importante para nosotros ser buenos vecinos a cambio.)

Este es el último domingo del P. José con nosotros. Su última Misa aquí será mañana por la mañana a las 8:00 a.m. el P. Logan llegará mañana y celebrará su primer Misa en español mañana lunes a las 6 p.m. y el martes a las 8 a.m en inglés. ¡Sería genial si hubiera una gran multitud aquí para darle la bienvenida! Una de las tantas cosas hermosas que disfruto tanto de nuestra parroquia es la asistencia que tenemos para la Misa diaria. Un pastor de una parroquia mucho más grande que la nuestra recientemente se lamentó que sólo tiene 8 personas en sus Misas matutinas entre semana. ¡Al día siguiente había 40 personas aquí! ¿Estás aprovechando las oportunidades de pasar tiempo con el Señor en la Eucaristía durante la semana?

Fue genial ver a más personas en la Misa del domingo pasado en el primer domingo con la obligación renovada de asistir a la Santa Misa los domingos y días santos de la obligación. ¡Bienvenido de nuevo! Les hemos extrañado mucho y estamos contentos de que estén aquí adorando a Cristo en la Eucaristía con nosotros.

Hoy estoy fuera con mi familia celebrando el Día del Padre. Como muchos de ustedes saben, es la primera vez que mi hermano celebra ser padre, ya que él y mi cuñada esperan el nacimiento de su hija, Lucy Gregerson, el próximo mes. ¡Gracias por sus oraciones por ellos!
