Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, July 25th, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Thanks to everyone who has helped so far with the Elkhart County Fair parking fundraiser! It has been great to see our parishioners working together to help our parish and the broader community. We will be out at the fair until Friday. There are probably still some slots to fill – call the parish office to sign up.

Last Friday, news emerged from the Vatican that Pope Francis has made changes to the regulation of the Extraordinary Form (the “Traditional Latin Mass”). The permission of the Bishop is now necessary, and it is not allowed to be celebrated in parish churches. We have had some occasional celebrations of the Extraordinary Form here at St. John’s the past few years, and they have been incredibly fruitful. Many people have experienced and loved the great sense of holiness and reverence present in this rite, and the Latin language has helped to bring together Spanish and English speakers, worshipping side by side in an ancient rite. Several people have asked me whether we will continue to be able to host these occasional Solemn Extraordinary Form Masses here at St. John’s. I’m honestly not sure. A lot may depend on the permissions that Bishop Rhoades chooses to grant. Pope Francis’s new regulations prohibit its celebration in parish churches, but Bishop Rhoades may be able to dispense from that prohibition. If it is important to you to continue experiencing the Extraordinary Form here in our parish, I would suggest that you let him know that with a letter (P.O. Box 390, Ft. Wayne, IN 46801). Several people have also contributed generously towards the purchase of more vestments for these occasional Masses here and at other parishes in Michiana. We actually just collected enough to purchase a new set of white vestments, so we will proceed with that purchase in the hope that they can still be used for an Extraordinary Form Solemn Mass and knowing that they will definitely be used for the beautiful and reverent worship of Christ in the Eucharist in one form or another.

Recent read: The Moviegoer by Walker Percy. This is Percy’s first published novel, in which he demonstrates the empty nature of modern life. While not an explicit apologetic for the Faith, Percy begins to make an implicit case for the necessity of belief.

¡Gracias a todos los que han ayudado hasta ahora con la recaudación de fondos de estacionamiento de la Feria del Condado de Elkhart! En general ha sido genial ver a nuestros feligreses trabajando juntos para ayudar a nuestra parroquia y a la comunidad. Estaremos en la feria hasta el jueves. El viernes pasado, el Vaticano informó de que el Papa Francisco ha introducido cambios en la regulación de la forma extraordinaria (la "Misa Tradicional en Latín"). Hemos tenido algunas celebraciones ocasionales de la forma extraordinaria aquí en San Juan en los últimos años, y han sido increíblemente fructíferas. Varias personas me han preguntado si continuaremos siendo capaces de celebrar ocasionalmente las Misas solemnes de forma extraordinaria aquí en San Juan y sinceramente, no estoy seguro.Todo depende de los permisos que el Monseñor Rhoades decida conceder.
