Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, January 2nd

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Happy Epiphany! Today we celebrate one of the greatest feasts of the Church year – the manifestation of Christ to the nations in the three events of the coming of the wise men, Christ’s Baptism, and the wedding feast at Cana. In many countries, the Epiphany (traditionally and properly observed on January 6th) is celebrated with more solemnity than Christmas, and for most of the Church’s history it ranked as a higher feast day with an uninterrupted octave – eight days of celebration.

We get back to regular daily life this week with the resumption of school, but really the joy of the Christmas season continues! Not only is there Epiphany, but next Sunday we will celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, and then His Presentation in the Temple on February 2nd.

We begin the new year of 2022, asking for God’s blessings upon this year and committing ourselves to cooperate with His grace as we strive to continue growing as His disciples. Maybe there is a spiritual New Year’s resolution you could make for 2022, like committing to praying the Rosary (especially together as a family) or attending daily Mass. [English only] In 2020 we started offering a Mass on Wednesday evening in English so that we would have at least one evening daily Mass in English. The response was initially quite enthusiastic but has since tapered off. Maybe you could make this your New Year’s commitment? [Both] Other ideas could be going to confession monthly – we have confessions 11 times a week! That should tell you how important it is – or to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Thursday evening. Or committing to praying for 15 minutes every morning, giving God the first 1% of each day.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

¡Feliz Epifanía! Hoy celebramos una de las fiestas más grandes del año de la Iglesia: la manifestación de Cristo a las naciones en los tres eventos de la llegada de los reyes magos, el bautismo de Cristo y la fiesta de las bodas de Caná. En muchos países, la Epifanía (tradicional y apropiadamente observada el 6 de enero) se celebra con más solemnidad que la Navidad, y durante la mayor parte de la historia de la Iglesia se clasificó como un día de fiesta superior con una octava ininterrumpida: ocho días de celebración.

Volvemos a la vida cotidiana esta semana con la reanudación de la escuela, ¡pero realmente la alegría del tiempo navideño continúa! No solo es el día de la Epifanía, sino que el próximo domingo celebraremos el Bautismo del Señor, y luego el 2 de febrero Su Presentación en el Templo.

Comenzamos el nuevo año 2022, pidiendo a Dios las bendiciones sobre este año y comprometiéndonos a cooperar con Su gracia mientras nos esforzamos por seguir creciendo como Sus discípulos. Tal vez este Año Nuevo hays una resolución espiritual que podría hacer para 2022, como comprometerse a rezar el Rosario (especialmente juntos como familia) o asistir a la Misa diaria. Otras ideas podrían ser ir a confesarse mensualmente – ¡tenemos confesiones 11 veces a la semana! Esto debe decirle lo importante que es – o ir los jueves por la noche a Adoración al Santísimo Sacramento. O comprometerse a orar por 15 minutos cada mañana, dando a Dios el primer 1% de cada día.
