Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, Feb. 28

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It was great to kick off our Lenten series on St. Joseph this past week. We are looking forward to our second session this Tuesday on St. Joseph’s relationship with Mary and how he can teach us to grow in devotion to our Blessed Mother. Remaining sessions will focus on: Week 3: The fatherhood of St. Joseph and lessons for earthly fatherhood. Week 4: St. Joseph and the sanctification of work. Week 5: St. Joseph, terror of demons. We look forward to seeing you this Tuesday for our first session! The Spanish track starts at 6 p.m. with Mass in the church and the English track starts at 6:30 p.m. in the gym.

One of the hallmarks of Lent is the Sacrament of Penance (confession), especially for priests, who spend a lot of extra time in the confessional during this season. Please note that we no longer have penance services during Advent and Lent, but instead have Confession available every weeknight starting at 6:30 p.m., as well as every weekday morning at 7:30 a.m. Fr. Jose and I are spending extra time with the young people in religious education on Sundays for their confessions. Last Sunday, in addition to celebrating three Masses, I head confessions for three hours, and this will be the “normal” for us during Lent. Because of needing to offer confessions for our religious education participants, we are not able to offer an extra Mass in the gym during the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Instead, during the season of Lent, that overflow will be a livestream. We are so blessed to have more people coming to Mass than we can accommodate in our church. I look forward very eagerly to the day when we can have everyone together in the same place again. In the meantime, the 9 a.m. Mass in Spanish has become the most popular Mass time at our parish. Many people have expressed their great appreciation for this opportunity. Numerous parishioners have to work on Sunday afternoons are very previously not able to make it to Mass on a regular basis.

This Tuesday the priests of our Diocese will gather (virtually) for our Lenten day of recollection. Could you remember to pray for us on Tuesday, that this opportunity for spiritual renewal might bring us closer to the Lord?

Recent read: Live Not by Lies: A manual for Christian dissidents by Rod Dreher. In this fascinating and accessible book, the author documents his interviews with survivors of totalitarian regimes in central and eastern Europe and probes their insights that the contemporary situation in the West strongly resembles what they experienced in the lead-up to totalitarianism. Recommended read for all.

Queridos hermanos en Cristo,

Fue genial iniciar nuestra serie Camino Cuaresmal sobre San José la semana pasada. Esperamos con interés nuestra segunda sesión este martes sobre la relación de San José con María y cómo puede enseñarnos a crecer en devoción a nuestra Santísima Madre. Semana 3 La paternidad de San José y las lecciones para la paternidad terrenal. Semana 4 San José y la santificación del trabajo. Semana 5 San José, terror de demonios. ¡Esperamos verlos este martes para la primera sesión! El curso en español comienza a las 6 p.m. con la Misa en la iglesia y el curso en inglés comienza a las 6:30 p.m. en el gimnasio.

Uno de los sellos distintivos de la Cuaresma es el Sacramento de la Penitencia (confesión), especialmente para los sacerdotes que pasan mucho tiempo extra en el confesionario durante esta temporada. Tenga en cuenta que ya no tenemos servicios de penitencia durante el Adviento y la Cuaresma, sino que tenemos Confesión disponible cada día entre semana a partir de las 6:30 p.m., así como todos los días de la semana a las 7:30 a.m. El P. José y yo estamos pasando tiempo extra los domingos con los jóvenes de educación religiosa para sus confesiones. El domingo pasado, además de celebrar tres Misas, escuché confesiones durante tres horas, y esto será lo "normal" para nosotros durante la Cuaresma. Debido a la necesidad de ofrecer confesiones para nuestros participantes de educación religiosa, no podemos ofrecer una misa extra en el gimnasio durante la misa de las 9:00 a.m. En cambio, durante la temporada de Cuaresma, ese desbordamiento será una transmisión en vivo. Estamos tan bendecidos de tener más gente que viene a Misa de lo que podemos acomodar en nuestra iglesia. Espero ansiosamente el día en que podamos estar todos juntos en el mismo lugar de nuevo. Mientras tanto, la Misa de las 9 a.m. en español La misa en español se ha convertido en la Misa más popular de nuestra parroquia. Muchas gente han expresado su gran agradecimiento por esta oportunidad. Numerosos feligreses tienen que trabajar los domingos por la tarde y antes no podían ir a Misa regularmente.

Este martes los sacerdotes de nuestra Diócesis se reunirán (virtualmente) para nuestro día de recuerdo cuaresmal. ¿Podrían recordar orar por nosotros el martes, para que esta oportunidad de renovación espiritual nos acerque al Señor?
