Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, December 19, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Thank you to everyone who helped with all the wonderful festivities for Our Lady of Guadalupe last weekend! I also appreciate everyone’s understanding with the modifications that had to be made to our normal celebrations due to Her day falling on Sunday this year. Next year we will be “back to normal” 100%! In the meantime, we should be grateful that God has made it possible for us to gather this year. I am also very thankful to everyone who has helped with the posadas as we get ready for the birth of the Lord. Church decorating will happen after the 3 p.m. Mass today – the excitement just keeps building! I am so grateful for all the different ways so many people help to make these celebrations as beautiful an offering to the Infant Lord as possible.

With Christmas falling on a Saturday this year, please note that we will not have our regular 4:30 and 6:00 p.m. Masses on Saturday evening. We figured no one would want to come to Mass on the evening of Christmas. We look forward to celebrating the Holy Family together on Sunday. This is a good opportunity to recall that fulfilling our Sunday obligation on Sunday is supposed to be the normal experience for Catholics. The anticipated Sunday Mass on Saturday afternoon made possible in the 1970s was originally intended for hospital workers, emergency personnel, and others who are not able to make it to Mass on Sundays – not as a convenient option for those already planning to eat out on Saturday evening.

I am thrilled to be back to full capacity for Christmas Masses this year. We will not be using the gym for overflow. We will see how things go this year and decide if we want to offer overflow in the gym in the future. Everything is an experiment these past two years!

There are a few opportunities left for confession before Christmas. The longer you wait this week, though, the longer the lines will be. Don’t wait!

We are excited to share a new resource with you. In the pews, you will have noticed a red hardback book. These books are a permanent replacement to the disposable missalettes that we used to provide for following the readings at Mass. Each Sunday, the board in front of the St. Joseph shrine will have the page number of that Sunday’s readings. Using these books instead of the missalettes has several advantages:

· Is more respectful to the Word of God, rather than continually disposing of sacred texts.

· Will save our parish about $10,000 / year after the first three years of ownership.

· Is more ecologically conscious.

Please do not remove the books from the pews. We do not have extras to supply for any purpose other than keeping the books in the pews. If you would like a copy for yourself, you can find them on the website of International Library Publications. You can also always find the readings for Mass in English and Spanish at home on the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (usccb.org). Formed.org also provides great reflections on the Sunday readings to assist your prayer.

Recent read: The Cardinal by Henry Morton Robinson. These is an American Catholic classic. Highly recommended!

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

¡Gracias a todos los que ayudaron el fin de semana pasado con las festividades para Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe! También aprecio mucho la comprensión de todos con las modificaciones que tuvieron que hacerse a la celebración debido a que Su día este año cayó en domingo. El año que viene estaremos "de vuelta a la normalidad con la celebración" mientras tanto, debemos estar agradecidos de que Dios ha hecho posible que nos reunamos este año. También estoy muy agradecido con todos los que han ayudado con las posadas mientras nos preparamos para el nacimiento del Señor. La decoración de la iglesia ocurrirá hoy después de Misa de 3 p.m.: ¡la emoción sigue creciendo! Estoy muy agradecido por todas las diferentes formas en que tantas personas ayudan a hacer de estas celebraciones una ofrenda lo más hermosa posible al Niño Jesús.

Este año la Navidad cae en sábado, tenga en cuenta que no tendremos nuestro horario regular de Misas el sábado por la noche 4:30 y 6:00 p.m. Pensamos que nadie querría venir a Misa en la noche de Navidad. Esperamos celebrar juntos a La Sagrada Familia el domingo. Esta es una buena oportunidad para recordar que cumplir con nuestra obligación dominical el domingo se supone que es la experiencia normal para los católicos. La anticipada Misa dominical del sábado por la tarde fue posible en la década de 1970 y fue originalmente destinada para trabajadores del hospital, personal de emergencia, y otros que no pueden llegar a Misa los domingos – no como una opción conveniente para aquellos que ya están planeando comer fuera el sábado por la noche.

Estoy encantado de volver a estar a plena capacidad este año para las Misas de Navidad. No usaremos el gimnasio para Misas de desbordamiento. Veremos cómo van las cosas este año y decidiremos si queremos ofrecer desbordamiento en el gimnasio en el futuro. ¡Todo es un experimento estos últimos dos años!

Todavía quedan algunas oportunidades para ir a confesarse antes de Navidad. Mientras más esperes esta semana, más largas serán las líneas. ¡No esperes!

En las bancas, habrás notado un libro rojo de tapa dura. Estos libros son un reemplazo permanente de los misalettes desechables que solíamos proporcionar para seguir las lecturas en la Misa. Cada domingo, el tablero frente al santuario de San José tendrá el número de página de las lecturas de ese domingo. El uso de estos libros en lugar de los missalettes tiene varias ventajas:

•Es más respetuoso con la Palabra de Dios, en vez de deshacerse continuamente de textos sagrados.

•Salvará a nuestra parroquia alrededor de $10.000 / año después de los tres primeros años de propiedad.

• Es más ecológico.

Por favor, no quite los libros de las bancas. No tenemos extras para suministrar para ningún otro propósito que no sea mantener los libros en las bancas.
