Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, December 11th

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We rejoice today on this Gaudete Sunday, recognizing how close the Lord is. We rejoice this week as well to celebrate the Patroness of the Americas, Empress of Latin America, Queen and Mother of Mexico, and Protectress of the Unborn, the Blessed Virgin Mary of Guadalupe. Mary’s appearance to the humble Juan Diego marked the beginning of an enormous period of missionary expansion in Mexico and through Central and South America that brought the Catholic faith and the saving power of the sacraments to millions of people. Her appearance for the first time 1) As a pregnant woman and 2) In the garb of a humble native person continues inspiring those who fight for the rights of the unborn and the marginalized. She is the perfect complement to last week’s celebration of Her Immaculate Conception, showing us the missionary zeal that is inspired by true devotion to Mary and Her Son, Jesus.

We look forward to seeing many people tomorrow for our celebrations of the Virgin of Guadalupe. In the past these have taken place the evening before the feast, but since that is a Sunday this year and our Sunday schedule is already so full, we are celebrating Her actual feast day – December 12th. We also made some changes to the schedule to place the Holy Mass at the center of our celebration (7 p.m.). Mary’s greatest mission is to bring people to Her Son, Jesus, and so She wants to bring us to Him in the Eucharist. In the past few years, the Mass did not take place until 11 p.m. and was the least-attended of all the festivities. Hopefully we will see that change this year!

Thank you to everyone who came to the combined Advent concert for the Catholic parishes of Elkhart County last Monday to support our English Mass choir! It was a beautiful evening full of sacred song and a preview of more great music to come.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Nos regocijamos hoy en este domingo de Gaudete, reconociendo lo cerca que está el Señor. También nos regocijamos esta semana para celebrar a la patrona de las Américas, emperatriz de América Latina, reina y madre de México, y Protectora de los no nacidos, la Santísima Virgen María de Guadalupe. La aparición de María al humilde Juan Diego marcó el inicio de un enorme período de expansión misionera en México y en Centro y Sudamérica que llevó la fe católica y el poder salvífico de los sacramentos a millones de personas. Su aparición por primera vez 1) como mujer embarazada y 2) en el atuendo de una humilde persona nativa que sigue inspirando a los que luchan por los derechos de los no nacidos y marginados. Ella es el complemento perfecto para la celebración de la semana pasada de Su Inmaculada Concepción, mostrándonos el celo misionero que se inspira en la verdadera devoción a María y a su Hijo, Jesús.

Esperamos ver a muchas gente mañana para nuestras celebraciones de la Virgen de Guadalupe. En el pasado, estos han tenido lugar la noche antes de la fiesta, pero como este año es un domingo y nuestro horario dominical ya está lleno, estamos celebrando Su fiesta real: el 12 de diciembre. También hicimos algunos cambios en el horario para colocar la Santa Misa en el centro de nuestra celebración (7 p.m.). La misión más grande de María es llevar a las personas a Su Hijo, Jesús y por eso quiere llevarnos a Él en la Eucaristía. En los últimos años, la Misa se ha celebrado a las 11 p.m. y ha sido la menos asistida de todas las festividades. ¡Esperemos ver ese cambio este año!

¡Gracias a todos los que fueron el lunes pasado al concierto combinado de Adviento para las parroquias católicas del condado de Elkhart para apoyar a nuestro coro de la Misa en inglés! Fue una noche hermosa llena de canciones sagradas y un anticipo de la buena música por venir.
