Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, August 22nd

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

One of the greatest joys for a parish is when a son or daughter of the parish discerns a vocation to the priesthood or religious life. Thomas Wheeler, son of Drs. Jim and Alice Wheeler, began seminary studies last week for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati at Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary of the West in Cincinnati. Please join me in praying for Thomas as he continues discerning the Lord’s will. Even though the Lord has lead him to discern his vocation in another Diocese, we are grateful for all Thomas has contributed to our parish – especially as a catechist and gym teacher in our parish school – and are excited to see how the Lord has used his participation in the life of our parish to further his vocational discernment. I hope that many more young men and women from our parish will follow his example and consider whether the Lord might be calling them as well to serve Him and His Church as a priest or religious.

It was great to see a significant increase in attendance at Mass last Sunday with the beginning of the school year and our catechesis classes. The 3 p.m. Mass in Spanish is available once again, and all pews are now available at all Masses. We continue to reserve the first row on both sides for persons with mobility challenges who might have difficulty coming up for Holy Communion. We ask that anyone needing this seating please fill all of the designated handicapped seating before creating your own handicapped section at the end of one of the other aisles. We also have an increased number of people needing the very low gluten hosts for Holy Communion. If you require this accommodation, please sit on the St. Joseph side, since the priest or minister on that side has the low gluten hosts. This is to keep the Communion line moving and also to avoid embarrassing you as the other priest goes to retrieve the low-gluten pyx and everyone begins rubber-necking to see why the line has stopped.

I will be away a few days this week getting to meet my new niece, Lucy Catherine Gregerson! She is almost one month old now and I am excited to meet her for the first time. I’ve been seeing a lot of photos and videos on our family chat feed, but nothing compares to holding a beloved child in your arms for the first time. We will also celebrate birthdays for my mother, sister, sister-lin-law, soon-to-be brother-in-law and most importantly of all, the baptism of Lucy.

Recent read: Collected Poems, 1909-1962 by T. S. Elliot. This is my favorite poet, and I had previously read most of his major works, but it was good to read some of his lesser known works as well.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Una de las mayores alegrías para una parroquia es cuando un hijo/hija de la parroquia discierne una vocación al sacerdocio o a la vida religiosa. Thomas Wheeler, hijo de los Doctores Jim y Alice Wheeler, comenzó sus estudios de seminario la semana pasada para la Arquidiócesis de Cincinnati en el Seminario del Oeste de Mt. St. Mary en Cincinnati. Por favor, únase a mí para orar por Thomass mientras continúa discerniendo la voluntad del Señor. A pesar de que el Señor lo ha llevado a discernir su vocación en otra Diócesis, estamos agradecidos por todo lo que Tomás ha contribuido a nuestra parroquia, especialmente como catequista y profesor de gimnasia en nuestra escuela parroquial, y estamos emocionados de ver cómo el Señor ha utilizado su participación en la vida de nuestra parroquia para promover su discernimiento vocacional. Espero que muchos más hombres y mujeres jóvenes de nuestra parroquia sigan su ejemplo y consideren si el Señor podría estar llamándolos también para servirle a Él y a Su Iglesia como sacerdotes o religiosos.

Fue genial ver un aumento significativo en la asistencia a la Misa el domingo pasado con el comienzo del año escolar y nuestras clases de catequesis. Una vez más la Misa de las 3 p.m. en español está disponible, y todas las bancas ya están disponibles en todas las Misas. Seguimos reservando la primera fila en ambos lados para personas con problemas de movilidad que podrían tener dificultades para venir a recibir la Sagrada Comunión. Pedimos que cualquier persona que necesite este asiento por favor llenen todos los asientos designados para discapacitados antes de crear su propia sección para discapacitados al final de uno de los otros pasillos. También tenemos un mayor número de personas que necesitan hostía baja en gluten para la Sagrada Comunión. Si necesita está hostía, por favor siéntese en el lado de la estatua de San José, ya que el sacerdote o ministro de ese lado tiene la hostía bajo en gluten. Esto es para mantener la línea de comunión en movimiento y también para evitar avergonzarle, ya que el otro sacerdote va a agarrar la caja ostiario bajo en gluten y todos comienzan a mover el cuello para ver porque la línea se ha detenido.

Estaré ausente unos días esta semana para conocer a mi nueva sobrina, Lucy Catherine Gregerson! Ella tiene casi un mes y estoy emocionado de conocerla por primera vez. He estado viendo muchas fotos y vídeos en nuestro chat familiar, pero nada se compara con sostener a un niño amado en sus brazos por primera vez. También celebraremos cumpleaños de mi madre, hermana, cuñada y el que pronto será mi cuñado y lo más importante de todo, el bautismo de Lucy.
