Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, August 20th

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today we welcome back our students in our religious education program! This is always a joyful but also very busy day. I am so grateful to the catechists, volunteers, and staff who put forth a heroic effort to make possible the large scale off our youth catechesis program.

Canon law makes clear that it is the obligation of each parish to assist the parents in the formation of their children in the faith, fulfilling the promise they made at their children’s baptism to raise their children in the Catholic Faith. This obligations rests principally upon the pastor, but fulfilling it would be impossible without all the other members of the parish. This is a sacred trust given to us by the Lord – not only to the parents of these children, but to an entire community of faith that is entrusted with the transmission of the Catholic faith to the next generations. This mission is supported by the catechists and volunteers, those who help to welcome the families of these students at Mass, and those who generously support our parish financially, making it possible for us to keep our facilities open and our support staff in place.

Some unique aspects of our youth catechesis program stand out in my mind:

· Size and scale: For even many large parishes, religious education outside of a Catholic school is rather an afterthought, involving very few students. At St. John the Evangelist, this apostolate serves more people than any other at our parish outside of Sunday Masses.

· Parent Formation: We have the most robust parent formation program of not only any parish in our diocese, but of any parish I have heard of anywhere. While this might seem like an onerous obligation to some, it is all about helping parents to fulfill the promises they made at their children’s baptism.

· Mass attendance: At many parishes, students in religious education programs are notorious for never attending Holy Mass. Six years ago, students in our Spanish program attended Mass together each Sunday, but attendance on the part of parents and other family members was poor; students in the English program were not held to any standard regarding Mass attendance. Mass attendance during the summer months plummeted. Over the past few years, we have promoted a culture of families attending Mass together as a family, with a high rate of compliance with our Mass attendance requirements for any child or young person preparing for First Holy Communion or Confirmation. As a result, attendance at Sunday Masses at St. John’s was higher this summer than we have experienced in many years. Helping families form good habits around Mass attendance will help our parish grow and, even more importantly, save their souls.

Recent read: Why Liberalism Failed by Patrick J. Deneen. The title of this book refers not to left-leaning politics but rather to the entire system of politics that sees the end of government as the maximization of liberty. One of the authors central claims is that politics in the contemporary world is contended between left-liberals and right-liberals, and that the excesses of liberalism were actually baked into it from the beginning when we allowed a political system to develop that sees only the maximization of freedom as its goal rather than the promotion of the integral common good. This book has been much-discussed in the past few years and is very much worth a read.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

¡Hoy damos la bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes en nuestro programa de educación religiosa! Este es siempre un día alegre pero también muy ocupado. Estoy muy agradecido con los catequistas, voluntarios y personal que hicieron un esfuerzo heroico para hacer posible la gran escala de nuestro programa de catequesis juvenil.

El derecho canónico deja claro que es obligación de cada parroquia ayudar a los padres en la formación de sus hijos en la fe, cumpliendo la promesa que hicieron en el bautismo de sus hijos de criar a sus hijos en la fe católica. Esta obligación recae principalmente en el párroco, pero cumplirla sería imposible sin todos los demás miembros de la parroquia. Esta es una confianza sagrada que nos ha dado el Señor, no solo a los padres de estos niños, sino a toda una comunidad de fe a la que se le confía la transmisión de la fe católica a las próximas generaciones. Esta misión es apoyada por los catequistas y voluntarios, aquellos que ayudan a dar la bienvenida a las familias de estos estudiantes en la Misa, y aquellos que generosamente apoyan financieramente a nuestra parroquia, haciendo posible que mantengamos nuestras instalaciones abiertas y nuestro personal de apoyo en su lugar.

Algunos aspectos únicos de nuestro programa de catequesis juvenil se destacan en mi mente:

· Tamaño y escala: Incluso para muchas parroquias grandes, la educación religiosa fuera de una escuela católica es más bien una idea tardía, involucrando a muy pocos estudiantes. En San Juan Evangelista, este apostolado sirve a más personas que cualquier otra en nuestra parroquia fuera de las misas dominicales.

· Formación de padres: Tenemos el programa de formación de padres más sólido no solo de cualquier parroquia en nuestra diócesis, sino de cualquier parroquia de la que haya oído hablar en cualquier lugar. Si bien esto puede parecer una obligación onerosa para algunos, se trata de ayudar a los padres a cumplir las promesas que hicieron en el bautismo de sus hijos.

· Asistencia a misa: En muchas parroquias, los estudiantes en programas de educación religiosa son conocidos por nunca asistir a la Santa Misa. Hace seis años, los estudiantes en nuestro programa de español asistían a misa juntos todos los domingos, pero la asistencia por parte de los padres y otros miembros de la familia era pobre; los estudiantes en el programa de inglés no estaban sujetos a ningún estándar con respecto a la asistencia a misa. La asistencia a misa durante los meses de verano se desplomó. En los últimos años, hemos promovido una cultura de familias que asisten a la Misa juntos como una familia, con una alta tasa de cumplimiento con nuestros requisitos de asistencia a la Misa para cualquier niño o joven que se prepara para la Primera Comunión o Confirmación. Como resultado, la asistencia a las misas dominicales este verano en San Juan fue más alto de lo que hemos experimentado en muchos años. Ayudar a las familias a formar buenos hábitos en torno a la asistencia a la misa ayudará a nuestra parroquia a crecer y, aún más importante, a salvar sus almas.
