Pastor's Weekly Update: Sunday, August 15th

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Last week we celebrated the funeral of Deacon Dave Elchert. Deacon Dave served our parish as a deacon from 2011 until his death two weeks ago, and in many other ways before his diaconal ordination as well. His presence in our parish will be greatly missed. Thank you to everyone who came to pray for him and his family at his funeral last week. We were grateful for the presence of the diocesan Vicar General, Fr. Mark Gurtner, who attended on the Bishop’s behalf, and many priests and deacons came to pray with us as well. I’m sure I can count on the prayers of all our parishioners for the repose of his soul and the consolation of his family, especially his wife of 59 years, Donna. Eternal rest grant unto him oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

The “green” Sundays through the year (“Ordinary Time”) are interrupted today by the Solemnity of the Assumption. This is the most ancient Marian feast of the entire year, with Christians having celebrated the Blessed Mother on August 15th since the earliest centuries of the Church’s life. While we’ve been exploring the Eucharist through meditating on the sixth chapter of the Gospel according to St. John, today’s feast gives us the opportunity to consider the heavenly destiny to which the Eucharist helps us aspire and to which Our Lady has so gloriously attained.

It was a joy to begin the school year last week with our parish school, and now we are excited to start religious education classes today. I am so grateful to the many catechists and other volunteers who make it possible for us to form the young people of our parish to be disciples of Jesus.

With the beginning of religious education classes, we expect a significant increase in Mass attendance, as usually happens here this time of year. The 3 p.m. Mass in Spanish resumes today, and as we announced last Sunday all pews will now be available. Mask use continues to be optional. We are also continuing to stream Sunday Masses for those who are dispensed from the Sunday obligation because of advanced age, preexisting medical conditions, sickness, or quarantine.

Recent read: Hannah Arendt. The Origins of Totalitarianism. I’ve wanted to read this book since taking a political philosophy course in college and finally got around to it. There has been a lot written recently about new forms of totalitarianism in Western societies, so it seemed like the right time to read what is generally regarded as the first and definitive study of totalitarianism in Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia as well as its origins in European antisemitism and colonialism.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

La semana pasada celebramos el funeral del diácono Dave Elchert. El diácono Dave sirvió a nuestra parroquia como diácono desde 2011 hasta su muerte hace dos semanas, y también de muchas otras maneras antes de su ordenación diaconal. Se extrañara mucho su presencia en nuestra parroquia. Gracias a todos los que vinieron a orar por él y su familia en su funeral la semana pasada. Agradecemos la presencia del Vicario General diocesano, P. Mark Gurtner, quien asistió en nombre del Monseñor Obispo, y también a todos los sacerdotes y diáconos que vinieron a orar con nosotros. Estoy seguro de que puedo contar con las oraciones de todos nuestros feligreses por el reposo de su alma y el consuelo de su familia, especialmente de su esposa Donna de 59 años. Dale Señor el eterno descanso, y deja que brille la luz perpetua sobre él. Que su alma, y las almas de los fieles difuntos, por la misericordia de Dios, descansen en paz.

Los domingos "verdes" a lo largo del año ("Tiempo Ordinario") son interrumpidos hoy por la Solemnidad de la Asunción. Esta es la fiesta Mariana más antigua de todo el año, con los cristianos habiendo celebrado a la Santísima Madre el 15 de agosto desde los primeros siglos de la vida de la Iglesia. Mientras hemos estado explorando la Eucaristía a través de la meditación en el sexto capítulo del Evangelio según San Juan, la fiesta de hoy nos da la oportunidad de considerar el destino celestial al que la Eucaristía nos ayuda a aspirar y al que Nuestra Señora ha alcanzado tan gloriosamente.

Fue una alegría comenzar el año escolar la semana pasada con nuestra escuela parroquial, y ahora estamos emocionados de comenzar las clases de educación religiosa hoy. Estoy muy agradecido con todos los catequistas y otros voluntarios que hacen posible que formemos a los jóvenes de nuestra parroquia para que sean discípulos de Jesús.

Con el comienzo de las clases de educación religiosa, esperamos un aumento significativo en la asistencia a Misa, como suele suceder en esta época del año. La Misa de 3 p.m. en español se reanuda hoy, y como anunciamos el domingo pasado todas las bancas ya estarán disponibles. El uso de mascarillas sigue siendo opcional. También continuamos transmitiendo las Misas dominicales para aquellos que son dispensados de la obligación dominical debido a la edad avanzada, condiciones médicas preexistentes, enfermedad o cuarentena.
