Pastor's Weekly Update: October 18, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

For the past seven years, our parish has had the privilege of having one of the sons of our parish studying for the priesthood, Mr. Johnny Evangelista. Many of us have seen Johnny grow and mature and faithfully serve his home parish and other parishes in the Diocese, as well as concentrate on his studies and priestly formation. He has been a tremendous example to all of us, an

d particularly to the young men of our parish whom the Lord might be calling to a priestly vocation. A young man’s time in the seminary is about formation for the priesthood, but also about continued discernment of his vocation. We have been greatly looking forward to Johnny’s ordination to the diaconate and the priesthood, but we also recall that the accomplishment of God’s will is more important than the accomplis

hment of our own. Johnny and the Diocesan vocations team, including the Bishop, have come to the conclusion that he is not called to advance to Holy Orders at this time. I’m sure that this is a cause of sadness for many people, as it is for me, but we must remember that discernment of a vocation is about God’s will, which the Church helps us to know and discern. A vocation to the priesthood is a very serious matter, only to be approached with the utmost clarity in discernment and the greatest surety possible on the part of those responsible and the man in question himself that he is ready here and now to receive the sacrament of Holy Orders. I have had some good conversations with Johnny lat

ely, and he remains open to discerning God’s will for his life. Please pray for him and continue to support him as he discerns the way that God is calling him to live as His beloved son.

I hope that you picked up, took home, or downloaded our annual financial report that we shared with you recently. This year’s report includes, as always, a breakdown of our income and expenses, but focuses in particular on how our parish has responded to the pandemic. We wanted more people to be aware of the great work that has gone on here – by clergy, staff, and volunteers – to continue the mission of the Church in challenging times. I hope that you are inspired by the ways that we are continuing to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and celebrate His Paschal Mystery in the Sacraments. As you can see, this was not an easy financial year for us, but the parish administration and staff have done our very best to control costs and be good stewards of your generosity. I am heartily grateful to our dedicated and talented Parish Finance Council under the leadership of Mr. John Acosta for their guida

nce and wisdom.

We continue to make good progress towards our goal for the Annual Bishop’s Appeal. With every individual or family’s commitment, we will make and exceed our goal! Any money pledged over our goal of $80,000 will offset the losses we have incurred due to higher operating costs and lower collections over the past few months. 100% participation is the most important key to success!

on with Spain for a long time and enjoyed learning more about this pivotal figure in her history.

Durante los últimos siete años, nuestra parroquia ha tenido el privilegio de tener a uno de los hijos de nuestra parroquia estudiando para el sacerdocio, el Sr. Johnny Evangelista. Muchos de nosotros hemos visto a Johnny crecer y madurar y servir fielmente a su parroquia de origen y a otras parroquias en la Diócesis, así como concentrarse en sus estudios y formación sacerdotal. Ha sido un ejemplo tremendo para todos nosotros, y en particular para los jóvenes de nuestra parroquia a quienes el Señor podría estar llamando a una vocación sacerdotal. El tiempo de un joven en el seminario es sobre la formación para el sacerdocio, pero también sobre el discernimiento continuo de su vocación. H

emos estado esperando con ansias la ordenación de Johnny al diaconado y al sacerdocio, pero también recordamos que la voluntad de Dios es más importante que la nuestra. Johnny y el equipo de vocaciones diocesanas, incluyendo al Obispo, han llegado a la conclusión de que no está llamado a avanzar a las órdenes sagradas en este momento. Estoy seguro de que esto causará tristeza a muchas personas, como para mí, pero debemos recordar que el discernimiento de una vocación es sobre la voluntad de Dios, que la Iglesia nos ayuda a conocer y discernir. Una vocación al sacerdocio es un asunto muy serio, solamente para ser abordado con la máxima claridad en el discernimiento y la mayor seguridad posible por parte de los responsables y del hombre en cuestión de que está listo aquí y ahora para recibir el sacramento de los Santos Ordenes. He tenido muy buenas conversaciones con Johnny última

mente, y él permanece abierto a discernir la voluntad de Dios para su vida. Por favor oren por él y continúen apoyándolo mientras discierne la manera en que Dios lo llama a vivir como Su amado hijo.

Espero que haya recogido, se haya llevado a casa o haya descargado nuestro informe financiero anual que compartimos con usted hoy. El informe de este año incluye, como siempre, un análisis de nuestros ingresos y gastos, pero se enfoca en particular en cómo nuestra parroquia ha respondido a la pandemia. Queríamos que más se percataran del gran trabajo que se ha realizado aquí – por el clero, el personal y los voluntarios – para continuar la misión de la Iglesia en tiempos difíciles. Espero que sea inspirado por las formas en que seguimos predicando el Evangelio de Jesucristo y celebrando Su misterio pascual en los sacramentos. Como pueden ver, para nosotros, este no fue un año fácil financieramente, pero la administración y el personal de la parroquia han hecho todo lo posible para controlar los gastos y ser buenos administradores de su generosidad. Estoy muy agradecido con nuestro dedicado y talentoso Consejo de Finanzas Parroquiales bajo la dirección del Sr. John Acosta por su guía y sabiduría.
