Pastor's Weekly Update: Nov. 22nd

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Obviously all of us are concerned about the escalating situation with regards to the coronavirus, particularly here in Elkhart County. I am relieved that the new executive order from Governor Holcomb does not attempt to limit religious services, even if other gatherings we might want to hold at our parish could be limited by the county-by-county classification system. We will continue offering Mass here at St. John’s every day with the same precautions we have been implementing since May. We will also continue making Mass available via social media for all those unable to come or who are not comfortable coming in person.

We know that many people are particularly suffering right now because of illness and economic hardship. If you would like to support those in need, our Project CARE fund is a great way to do that as we have been using money from this fund to support those in need. If you know of a member of our community is struggling, please let us know by reaching out to the office, the priests, or the deacons.

I am sure we are all looking forward to Thanksgiving this week! Consider joining us for Mass to give thanks to almighty God. We will stream Mass on our social media accounts as well. I am thankful to Fr. Jose for covering for a few days so that I can see my family. (We take turns covering the holidays each year.) There is always so much to be thankful to God for. I am thankful for all of you – the wonderful people of our parish who have come together in beautiful ways this year to support each other and to continue the mission entrusted by God to us to be disciples and make disciples of Jesus! Please do be safe this weekend.

Recent read: The Lion of Munster: The bishop who roared against the Nazis by Daniel Utrecht. This is a biography of the Blessed Clemens Von Gallen, bishop of Munster during the Second World War. Bl. Clemens was the most heroic of the German bishops is standing up to the Nazis for the freedom of the Church and especially for denouncing the Nazis’ plans to euthanize the disabled.

Obviamente todos estamos preocupados por la situación que se intensifica en cuanto al coronavirus, en particular aquí en el condado de Elkhart. Me alivia que la nueva orden ejecutiva del Gobernador Holcomb no intente limitar los servicios religiosos, aún si tenemos otras reuniones en nuestra parroquia podrían estar limitadas por el sistema de clasificación a condado por condado. Seguiremos ofreciendo aquí en San Juan la Misa cada día con las mismas precauciones que hemos estado implementando desde mayo. También seguiremos poniendo las Misas a través de las redes sociales para todos aquellos que no puedan venir ni se sientan cómodos viniendo en persona.

Sabemos que en este momento particularmente muchas gente está sufriendo debido a enfermedades y dificultades económicas. Si desea apoyar a los necesitados, nuestro fondo ProjectCARE (Proyecto Cuidado/ Apoyando a los Pobres) es una gran manera de hacerlo, ya que hemos estado usando dinero de este fondo para apoyar a los necesitados. Si sabe que un miembro de nuestra comunidad está en apuros, por favor háganoslo saber poniéndose en contacto con la oficina, los sacerdotes o los diáconos.

¡Estoy seguro de que todos estamos esperando con ansias esta semana el Día de Acción de Gracias! Considera unirte a nosotros para la Misa para dar gracias a Dios todopoderoso. También transmitiremos la Misa en nuestras cuentas de redes sociales. Estoy agradecido al P. José por cubrirme por unos días para que pueda ver a mi familia. (Nos tomamos turnos cubriendo las vacaciones cada año.) Siempre hay mucho por lo que estar agradecido a Dios. ¡Estoy agradecido por todos ustedes, la gente maravillosa de nuestra parroquia que se ha reunido de maneras hermosas este año para apoyarnos unos a otros y continuar la misión confiada por Dios para ser discípulos y hacer discípulos de Jesús! Por favor, tenga cuidado este fin de semana.
