Pastor's Weekly Update: January 28, 2024

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

There has been a lot of media attention the past few weeks on a document that was released by the Vatican’s doctrine office (The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith) with the approval of Pope Francis on blessings of persons in irregular marital unions (including same-sex couples). As the Cardinal Secretary of State (the Pope’s “number two” in the Vatican) responded recently when asked about this document: “This document has aroused very strong reactions; this means that a very delicate, very sensitive point has been touched.” Having been asked quite a few times about this document and the controversy around it, I would like to note:

·         The document emphasizes repeatedly that no change to the Church’s teaching on marriage and sexuality is to be inferred from the document. The Catholic Church unhesitatingly affirms that marriage is the union of one man and one woman for life. This teaching will not change.

·         Unfortunately, numerous persons inside and outside the Church have asserted that the affirmation of the possibility, in limited circumstances, of imparting blessings to persons living in invalid unions is a development towards changing the Church’s perennial teachings on marriage and human sexuality. Those outside the Church who assert this are arguing from ignorance of the Church’s doctrine and governing structure. Those inside the Church (including, tragically, priests, religious, bishops, and episcopal conferences) who assert such things are betraying the Catholic faith and should be censored by the Holy See for directly contradicting the very document they claim as support for their mendacious theories.

·         The document repeatedly emphasizes that such blessings are not liturgical and are not to be given any ritual structure nor are any official texts for such blessings to be composed. The appearance of any kind of equivalence to a “blessing of a union” is explicitly forbidden. Those who have orchestrated publicized blessings of same-sex couples are in clear violation of the terms of the Vatican document.

·         The context envisioned for such blessings is extremely limited to spontaneous requests made to priests after Mass at a parish or especially at a pilgrimage site. In reading this document, we need to keep in mind the context of cultures in which people very frequently ask for a priest’s blessing. The context envisioned for blessing a same-sex couple seems something like: A same-sex couple goes on vacation to Rome, motivated by the history and beauty of the city. They go to the Vatican, and something about the experience moves them to recognize their need for God. So they ask for a blessing from a priest they find in St. Peter’s. Should he deny their request so as not to seem to condone their living in a sinful relationship? Or should he pray with them and ask God to bring them to the next step on their journey? That is really all that is being asked here.

·         People of good faith can certainly question the pastoral prudence of the way that this document was issued and the obvious ways in which it was likely to be manipulated. Papal infallibility does not extend to such matters of prudence. Unfortunately, there is no confidential system for the Pope to send memos to parish priests and I find out about things like this in the same way that you do.

Recent read: Black Earth: The Holocaust as history and warning by Timothy Snyder. This is a fascinating and controversial contemporary work of history that analyzes the role of the elimination of sovereign states and the Nazis’ reclassification of those states’ Jewish residents as “stateless” in the Holocaust.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Ha habido mucha atención en los medios de comunicación en las últimas semanas sobre un documento que fue publicado por la oficina de doctrina del Vaticano (el Dicasterio para la Doctrina de la Fe) con la aprobación del Papa Francisco sobre las bendiciones de las personas en uniones maritales irregulares (incluidas las parejas del mismo sexo). Como respondió recientemente el Cardenal Secretario de Estado (el “número dos” del Papa en el Vaticano) cuando se le preguntó sobre este documento: “Este documento ha suscitado reacciones muy fuertes; esto significa que se ha tocado un punto muy delicado y muy sensible”. Después de haber sido preguntado varias veces sobre este documento y la controversia en torno a él, me gustaría señalar lo siguiente:

 El documento enfatiza repetidamente que no se puede inferir ningún cambio en la enseñanza de la Iglesia sobre el matrimonio y la sexualidad del documento. La Iglesia Católica afirma sin duda que el matrimonio es la unión de un hombre y una mujer para toda la vida. Esta enseñanza no cambiará.

 Desafortunadamente, numerosas personas dentro y fuera de la Iglesia han afirmado que la afirmación de la posibilidad, en circunstancias limitadas, de impartir bendiciones a personas que viven en uniones inválidas es un desarrollo hacia el cambio de las enseñanzas perennes de la Iglesia sobre el matrimonio y la sexualidad humana. Aquellos fuera de la Iglesia que afirman esto están discutiendo desde la ignorancia de la doctrina de la Iglesia y la estructura de gobierno. Aquellos dentro de la Iglesia (incluyendo, trágicamente, sacerdotes, religiosos, obispos, y las conferencias episcopales) que afirman que tales cosas están traicionando la fe católica y deben ser censurados por la Santa Sede por contradecir directamente el mismo documento que afirman como apoyo a sus teorías mendaces.

 El documento enfatiza repetidamente que tales bendiciones no son litúrgicas y no deben recibir ninguna estructura ritual ni hay textos oficiales para que tales bendiciones sean compuestas. La apariencia de cualquier tipo de equivalencia a una "bendición de una unión" está explícitamente prohibida. Aquellos que han orquestado públicamente bendiciones de parejas del mismo sexo están en clara violación de los términos del documento del Vaticano.

 El contexto previsto para tales bendiciones es extremadamente limitado a las peticiones espontáneas hechas a los sacerdotes después de la Misa en una parroquia o especialmente en un lugar de peregrinación. Al leer este documento, debemos tener en cuenta el contexto de las culturas en las que la gente pide con mucha frecuencia la bendición de un sacerdote. El contexto previsto para bendecir a una pareja del mismo sexo parece algo así como: una pareja del mismo sexo se va de vacaciones a Roma, motivada por la historia y la belleza de la ciudad. Van al Vaticano, y algo en la experiencia los mueve a reconocer su necesidad de Dios. Así que piden la bendición de un sacerdote que encuentran en San Pedro. ¿Debería negar su petición para que no pareciera que aprueban su vida en una relación pecaminosa? ¿O debería orar con ellos y pedirle a Dios que los lleve al siguiente paso en su viaje? Eso es realmente todo lo que se está pidiendo aquí.

 Las personas de buena fe pueden cuestionar ciertamente la prudencia pastoral de la forma en que se emitió este documento y las formas obvias en las que probablemente fuera manipulado. La infalibilidad papal no se extiende a tales asuntos de prudencia. Desafortunadamente, no hay un sistema confidencial para que el Papa envíe memorandos a los párrocos y me entero de cosas como esta de la misma manera que ustedes.
