Pastor's Weekly Message: Sunday, June 6th

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We announced the name of our new parochial vicar at Mass today. We look forward to welcoming him on June 22nd.

The 3 p.m. Mass in Spanish has also been discontinued until catechesis resumes in August. We expect that the 3 p.m. Mass in Spanish will be a “seasonal” Mass in the future, running from August to the Sunday before Memorial Day.

We announced last Sunday that Bishop Rhoades will end the dispensation from the obligation to attend Holy Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation on June 11. The following groups of persons are still dispensed:

· Those who are seriously ill, exhibit flu-like symptoms and/or may have a contagious disease (including quarantine due to exposure).

· Those who are unable to attend Mass through no fault of their own (e.g. transportation issue).

· Those who are homebound and/or incapacitated due to age, infirmity and/or medical restrictions.

· Those who have compromised health conditions and/or at high risk of contracting the virus.

· Those who are caretakers of person who are sick or of persons at high-risk of serious illness if they contract Covid virus.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Corpus Christi procession today! If you are reading this before noon on Sunday it isn’t too late to join us! Much preparation for the procession was done by Johnny Evangelista, our pastoral associate, our English and Spanish choirs, servers, sacristans, and many others. Thank you to everyone for this beautiful witness to our faith in the real presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament! What a great reminder of the importance of the Eucharist in our worship and in our lives.

Don’t forget that Fr. Jose’s farewell party is next Sunday, June 13th, at 2 p.m. This is our first parish-wide social event since emerging from the pandemic and it is going to be a great time! For those who might not be able to participate on the 13th, there is also a “drive through” farewell for Fr. Jose at 2 p.m. on Saturday the 19th, which is his last weekend with us. Fr. Jose’s last Masses at St. John’s will be on Monday, June 21st.

Recent read: Time Must Have a Stop by Aldous Huxley. This novel is less famous than Huxley’s Brave New World, but it also quite good. While not Catholic, Huxley’s exploration of themes that touch on Catholic theology and philosophy is interesting and his portrayal of Catholicism is sympathetic.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Anunciamos el nombre del nuevo vicario parroquial en la Misa de hoy. Esperamos darle la bienvenida el 22 de junio. La misa de las 3 p.m. en español también se ha suspendido hasta que se reanude la catequesis en agosto. Esperamos que la misa de 3 p.m. en español será una misa "estacional" en el futuro que se llevará a cabo desde agosto hasta el domingo antes de Memorial Day.

Mons. Rhoades también anunció la exención de la obligación de asistir a la Santa Misa los domingos y días santos de obligación termina el 11 de junio. Se siguen dispensando los siguientes grupos de personas:

· Aquellos que están gravemente enfermos, presentan síntomas similares a los de la gripe y/o pueden tener una enfermedad contagiosa (incluida la cuarentena debido a la exposición).

· Aquellos que no pueden asistir a la misa por causas ajenas a su voluntad (por ejemplo, por problemas de transporte).

· Aquellos que están en casa y/o incapacitados debido a la edad, enfermedad y/o restricciones médicas.

· Aquellos que tienen condiciones de salud comprometidas y/o alto riesgo de contraer el virus.

· Aquellos que son cuidadores de personas enfermas o de personas con alto riesgo de enfermedad grave si contraen el virus Covid.

¡Gracias a todos los que participaron en la procesión del Corpus Christi hoy! Si estás leyendo esto antes del mediodía del domingo, ¡no es demasiado tarde para unirte a nosotros! Gran parte de la preparación para la procesión fue hecha por Johnny Evangelista, nuestro asociado pastoral, el coro en inglés y español, servidores, sacristán y muchos otros. ¡Gracias a todos por este hermoso testimonio de nuestra fe en la presencia real de Jesús en el Santísimo Sacramento! Qué gran recordatorio de la importancia de la Eucaristía en nuestra adoración y en nuestras vidas.

No hay que olvidar que la despedida del P. José es el próximo domingo, 13 de junio, a las 2 p.m. Este es nuestro primer evento social en toda la parroquia desde que surgió de la pandemia y ¡va a ser un gran momento! Para aquellos que no puedan participar el día 13, también hay una despedida "en coche" para el P. José a las 2 p.m. del sábado 19 que es su último fin de semana con nosotros. Las últimas misas del P. José en San Juan serán el lunes 21 de junio.
