Pastor's Weekly Message: Sunday, April 18, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we announced last Sunday, today you will notice some changes in our social distancing procedures. Just to remind you:

· Entrance is still through the north doors only for the next few weeks so that the ushers can help everyone get used to the new arrangement.

· You will now choose your own seats.

· The pews at the front of the church are designated as six-foot distance zones. If social distancing is not as important to you, please allow those who want to be distanced to have the first pick of these pews.

· When seated in the three-foot zone, please do leave three feet between you and your pew-mates from other households. But also use common sense. If you’re going out to dinner with them after Mass, it doesn’t make much sense to be distanced during Mass. We won’t be policing with whom you choose to sit.

· The number of pews reserved for each arrangement will depend on our attendance at each Mass and what we learn about people’s preferences over the next few weeks.

· Arriving early will help us to accommodate everyone with ease. Thank you for your punctuality!

· Mask wearing remains required and is more important with less distancing in place. Please wear your mask and wear it properly.

As a reminder, these changes are taking place NOT because we are not concerned about your safety, but because our volunteers, staff, and clergy have been stretched to the limit with providing overflow capacity for Sunday Masses. Safely increasing capacity is going to be a higher priority for us than taking off the masks. This is a chance for all of us to think about the bigger picture of what goes on here at St. John’s beyond just the Mass that you or I happen to attend. Getting Elkhart County down into the “blue zone” is what is most likely going to move us to “normal.”

Last week our presbyterate (all the priests in the Diocese) met in person for the first time since late 2019. It was so good to see our brothers again! Many of the priests are advanced in age and we have had to be particularly cautious to preserve their health.

I will be gone this week for some much-needed post-Lenten relaxation. You will likely not notice, though, because I’ll be back by Saturday.

Recent read: Longing for an Absent God: Faith and doubt in great American fiction by Nick Ripatrazone. This work explores how the Catholic faith has impacted different contemporary American authors. Some of the authors are practicing Catholics, and others are not, but it was interesting to see how Catholicism was present in all of their fiction.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Como anunciamos el domingo pasado, hoy notarás algunos cambios en nuestros procedimientos de distanciamiento social. Solo para recordarle:

· La entrada todavía es por las puertas norte(banco) sólo por las próximas semanas para que los ujieres puedan ayudar a todos a acostumbrarse a la nueva disposición.

· Ahora elegirá sus propios asientos.

· Las bancas en la parte delantera de la iglesia están designadas como zonas de distancia de seis pies. Si el distanciamiento social no es tan importante para usted, por favor permita que aquellos que quieren ser distanciados tengan la primera selección de estas bancas.

· Cuando esté sentado en la zona de tres pies, por favor deje tres pies entre usted y sus compañeros de banca de otros hogares. Pero también use el sentido común. Si vas a salir a cenar con ellos después de la misa, no tiene mucho sentido estar distanciado durante la misa. No estaremos vigilando con quién eliges sentarte.

· El número de bancas reservadas para cada arreglo dependerá de nuestra asistencia en cada misa y de lo que aprendamos sobre las preferencias de las personas en las próximas semanas.

· Llegar temprano nos ayudará a acomodar a todos con facilidad. ¡Gracias por su puntualidad!

· Se requiere el uso de mascarillas y es más importante con menos distanciamiento en su lugar. Por favor, use su mascarilla y úsasela correctamente.

Como recordatorio, estos cambios se llevan a cabo NO porque no estemos preocupados por su seguridad, sino porque nuestros voluntarios, personal y clero se han estirado hasta el límite con la capacidad de desbordamiento para las misas dominicales. Aumentar la capacidad de forma segura es la prioridad más alta para nosotros en vez de quitarnos las mascarillas. Esta es una oportunidad para todos nosotros de pensar en el panorama más amplio de lo que pasa aquí en San Juan más allá de la Misa a la que tú o yo asistimos. Obtener que el Condado de Elkhart se ponga en la "zona azul" es lo que muy probablemente nos va a llevar a la "normalidad".

La semana pasada nuestro presbiterio (todos los sacerdotes de la Diócesis) se reunió en persona por primera vez desde finales de 2019. ¡Fue tan bueno volver a ver a nuestros hermanos! Muchos de los sacerdotes son mayores de edad y hemos tenido que ser particularmente cautelosos para preservar su salud.

Me iré esta semana para una relajación post-Cuaresma muy necesaria. Es probable que no te des cuenta, porque volveré el sábado.
