Pastor's Weekly Message: December 27, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Merry Christmas! Our celebration of Christmas continues with the Octave of Christmas – eight days of continuous celebration. Normally on this Sunday within the Octave of Christmas we would celebrate the Holy Family, but this year, this Sunday falls on December 27th, which is our parish’s patronal feast day. So today we rejoice in the patronage of the Beloved Disciple, the Fourth Evangelist, the one who took the Blessed Mother into his home. We are privileged to have such a great patron for our parish.

Other celebrations this week will include: Monday – the Holy Innocents (the children killed by Herod as he sought the death of the Christchild), Tuesday – the Holy Family, Friday – Mary, Mother of God. It is particularly fitting that we celebrate Mary’s motherhood as we begin the new year this week. May God bless us with a holy new year in 2021 under Mary’s patronage.

The Holy Father has recently declared a Year of St. Joseph to commemorate the 150th anniversary of St. Joseph being declared the universal patron of the Church. We look forward to planning some activities to help us all celebrate this year. I am thinking that we will have a guided consecration to St. Joseph to culminate on his feast day on March 19th.

After this incredibly busy Christmas celebration, I am away for a week with my family. I am grateful to Fr. Fernando Jimenez for celebrating our 3 p.m. Mass today, and Fr. Jose working overtime in my absence. (We take turns being able to spend this week after Christmas with our families.)

We are excited to be welcoming a new member to our parish staff. He is already very familiar to many of you as it is Johnny Evangelista, who was studying for the priesthood for our Diocese for several years. After stepping away from priestly formation for the time being, we are excited that Johnny will continue serving our community, now as a full time member of our parish staff. Johnny will be our Pastoral Associate. He will be taking on a variety of tasks such as coordinating youth and young adult apostolates and strengthen our communications. With his depth of experience and knowledge of our community, Johnny will be a fantastic addition to our team.

Recent read: Kristinlavransdatter: The Wreath by Sigrid Undset. This is the first of three parts of Undset’s (a 20th Century Norwegian author) epic that follows the life of a woman in medieval Norway. Undset was a Catholic convert (controversial in early 20th century Norway) and her depiction of medieval Scandinavian Catholicism is realistic and sympathetic. Many people consider this trilogy to be among the great Catholic novels of recent times.

Queridos hermanos en Cristo,

¡Feliz Navidad! Nuestra celebración de la Navidad continúa con la Octava de la Navidad – ocho días de celebración continua. Normalmente, este domingo, dentro de la Octava de Navidad, celebraríamos La Sagrada Familia, pero este año, este domingo cae el día 27 de diciembre que es el día de fiesta patronal de nuestra parroquia. Así que hoy nos regocijamos en el patrocinio del Amado Discípulo, el Cuarto Evangelista, el que llevó a la Santísima Madre a su casa. Tenemos el privilegio de tener un gran patrón para nuestra parroquia.

Otras celebraciones que serán incluidas esta semana son: el lunes – día de los Santos Inocentes (los niños asesinados por Herodes mientras buscaba la muerte del niño Jesucristo), el martes – día de La Sagrada Familia, el viernes – el día de María, Madre de Dios. Es apropiado que celebremos esta semana particularmente la maternidad de María al comenzar el año nuevo. Que Dios nos bendiga con un año nuevo 2021 bendecido bajo el patrocinio de María.

El Santo Padre recientemente ha declarado un año de San José para conmemorar el 150 aniversario de cuando fue declarado San José el patrón universal de la Iglesia. Esperamos poder planificar algunas actividades que nos ayuden a celebrar este año. Estoy pensando que tendremos una consagración guiada a San José para culminar en su día de fiesta el 19 de marzo.

Después de esta celebración de Navidad increíblemente ocupada, estaré fuera por una semana con mi familia. Estoy agradecido con el P. Fernando Jiménez por celebrar la Misa de 3 p.m. el día de hoy, y con el P. José por trabajar horas extras en mi ausencia. (Nos turnamos para poder pasar esta semana después de Navidad con nuestras familias.

Estamos emocionados en darle la bienvenida a un nuevo miembro a nuestro equipo de personal parroquial. Muchos de ustedes ya lo conocen, es Johnny Evangelista, quien estuvo estudiando para el sacerdocio en nuestra diócesis durante varios años. Por el momento, decidió tomar un tiempo de la formación sacerdotal y estamos emocionados de que Johnny continúe sirviendo a nuestra comunidad, ahora como miembro de nuestro personal parroquial de tiempo completo. Johnny será nuestro asociado pastoral. Él estará asumiendo una variedad de funciones como coordinar el grupo de jóvenes y el apostolado de los adultos jóvenes y fortalecer nuestra comunicación. Con su conocimiento y experiencia profunda de nuestra comunidad, Johnny será una adición fantástica a nuestro equipo.
