Pastor's Weekly Message: Dec. 20, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our Advent journey is drawing to a close and we are joyfully waiting the coming celebration of Christmas this week! As happens every year, we think to ourselves, “How did Advent already fly by?” A brother priest of mine has long proposed that Advent should be lengthened to six weeks instead of four. (This is actually the case in certain parts of the Catholic world.) Even if you feel like you have not yet made sufficient preparation, it is not too late! Most importantly, we still have confessions on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings (7:30 a.m.) and evenings (6:30 p.m.). There can be no greater preparation for Christmas than a heart made clean by Christ’s forgiveness! If you have time for buying that last gift, putting up that last decoration, or buying the ingredients for your Christmas feast, you most certainly also have time for this most important preparation of all.

Christmas this year will be different, but the essentials are the same – we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Christ the Lord. His first coming to earth was humble and lowly, without majesty or grandeur but with intense love on the part of those who recognized Him. If our celebrations are humbler and subdued this year, make up for that with even greater love and devotion! We look forward to welcoming many people here at church for Christmas Masses. It is likely that we will be joined by many who have not yet experienced what Mass is like during the pandemic. Please be kind, patient, and understanding. Hopefully, their experience will inspire them to come back! It is very possible that we will run out of space at the 4 p.m. (English), 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. (Spanish) Masses. My recommendation is that you come at 10:00 p.m. (Spanish), midnight (English), or on Christmas Day. We will accommodate as many people as we can safely accommodate, but we are also limited by our space. Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding.

Normally on the Sunday after Christmas we celebrate Holy Family Sunday. This year, our patronal feast of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist (Dec. 27th each year) falls on that Sunday. It will be great to celebrate our patronal feast together! More on that next Sunday.

After this incredibly busy Christmas celebration, I will be away for a week with my family. Fr. Jose was able to spend some time with his family last week in anticipation of Christmas. It is hard for me to imagine what “relaxing” looks like for him since he is constantly on the move!

Recent read: Bonus samaritanus Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. This document was recently released by the Vatican’s doctrinal office. It is mostly notable for a controversial question that was answered – whether or not people who have decided to end their lives by physician assisted suicide or euthanasia can receive the sacraments. The Congregation affirms that these are grave sins, and that anyone who commits them without repenting cannot be admitted to the sacraments. Instead, all those suffering from terminal illness are encouraged to embrace the Cross and value their lives as gifts from God.

Queridos hermanos en Cristo,

¡Nuestro recorrido de Adviento está llegando a su fin y estamos esperando con alegría la próxima celebración de Navidad esta semana! Como sucede cada año, pensamos en nosotros mismos, ¿"Cómo pasó el Adviento tan rapido"? Un hermano sacerdote mío ha propuesto durante mucho tiempo que el Adviento se alargara a seis semanas en lugar de cuatro. (Este es el caso en ciertas partes del mundo católico.) ¡Incluso si usted siente que no ha hecho todavía la preparación suficiente, no es demasiado tarde! Lo más importante es que todavía tenemos confesiones los lunes, martes y miércoles por la mañana (7:30 a.m.) y por la noche (6:30 p.m.). ¡No puede haber mayor preparación para la Navidad que un corazón limpio perdonado por Cristo! Si tiene tiempo para comprar ese último regalo, poner esa última decoración, o comprar los ingredientes para banquete de Navidad, seguramente también tienes tiempo para esta preparación más importante de todas. Sin duda también tiene tiempo para esta preparación la más importante de todas.

La Navidad de este año será diferente, pero lo esencial es lo mismo: celebramos el nacimiento de nuestro Salvador, Cristo el Señor. Su primera llegada a la tierra fue humilde y modesta, sin esplendor o grandeza, pero con un amor intenso por parte de aquellos que lo reconocieron. Si este año nuestras celebraciones son más humildes y tenues, ¡compénselo con amor y devoción! Esperamos dar la bienvenida a mucha gente aquí en la iglesia para las misas de Navidad. Es probable que nos acompañen muchos que todavía no han experimentado cómo es la misa durante la pandemia. Por favor, sea amable, paciente y comprensivo. ¡Esperamos que su experiencia los inspire a volver! Es muy posible que nos agotemos el espacio en las misas de las 4 p.m. (inglés), 6:00 p.m. y 8:00 p.m. (español). Mi recomendación es que vengas a la misa de las 10:00 p.m.(español), medianoche (inglés) o el día de Navidad. Vamos a acomodar a lo más que se pueda de gente con seguridad, pero también estamos limitados por nuestro espacio. Gracias de antemano por su paciencia y comprensión.

Normalmente el domingo después de Navidad celebramos el domingo de La Sagrada Familia. Este año, nuestra fiesta patronal de San Juan el Apóstol y Evangelista (27 de diciembre de cada año) cae en ese domingo. ¡Será genial celebrar juntos nuestra fiesta patronal! Más sobre eso el próximo domingo.

Después de esta celebración de Navidad increíblemente ocupada, estaré fuera por una semana con mi familia. P. José pudo pasar algún tiempo con su familia la semana pasada en anticipación de la Navidad. ¡Es difícil para mí imaginar lo que la palabra "relajar" significa para él, ya que constantemente está en movimiento!
