Pastor's Message: Giving Back to our Community and Financial Accountability

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Earlier this year we announced a new initiative called St. John’s Community Partners, by which we sought your help to determine how St. John’s can give back to our local community. This initiative responds to a goal set by our parish Finance Council for our parish to practice what we preach – giving 10 percent of our income back to the Lord, who we recognize all the source of all that we receive. We already give six percent back to the charitable work of the Church through our Diocese, and we are working towards allocating an additional four percent of our offertory income towards local charitable causes (beginning with one percent this year). Seeking to engage more parishioners in this process, we encouraged parishioners to nominate organizations they believed worthy of our support. We only received two nominations, but they were both excellent and the parish Finance Council was excited to support them both. While I felt some uncertainty about whether we should go ahead with this initiative while the parish is experiencing a decline in revenue, our Finance Council was adamant that we should honor this commitment. I definitely believe they made the right decision.

Our first nominee was The Window, which supports those in need with food, clothing, and other resources. The Window is one of the few food pantries in our area that has the appropriate license to distribute fresh meat as well as non-perishable products, which honors the dignity of those who receive assistance and helps to ensure adequate nutrition for these families. They have previously relied on a patchwork of residential freezers to store donations before distribution, but some generous donors recently helped them to obtain commercial grade freezers. However, their electrical infrastructure proved inadequate for the upgraded equipment. St. John’s was excited to step in and pay for the electrical system upgrades (a cost of $5,600) to make the new freezer operational. Thanks to our partnership, The Window will be able to keep donated meat safe for distribution to the many families and individuals in need they are serving.

Our second nominee was Redeemer Radio. This Catholic radio apostolate was nominated by a young adult couple because of the impact they have seen Redeemer Radio have on young adult Catholics. While many people have been disconnected from the ways their faith is normally nurtured during the pandemic, Redeemer Radio has helped provide a sense of connection to the Catholic faith and our local church during a difficult time. We were happy to support Redeemer Radio with a $1,500 donation (the balance of our tithing allocation after supporting The Window’s project).

I hope that next year we will receive more nominations and be able to support more of the organizations that you see having an impact on our community.

Speaking of our parish Finance Council, I am excited that John Acosta has agreed to be the next chairman of our Finance Council. When I arrived at St. John’s there was no designated chairman of this council and the pastor served as the de-facto chair. Lay leadership is important for the church, especially with regards to our parish finances, so it was important to me that we increase lay leadership in this important area of financial oversight. John and his family have been a part of St. John’s for a long time. He is bilingual and roots in both our Anglo and Hispanic communities. His father, Juan Acosta, served with Deacon Ricardo Medina on the first Hispanic ministry initiative in our parish. John has served in the past on our parish school board and with the Knights of Columbus. He is the President of Acosta Insurance. His leadership and financial skill will be a great asset for our Finance Council going forward.

Recent read: Knowing the Natural Law: From precepts and inclinations to deriving oughts by Steven J. Jensen. This book responds to the New Natural Law theory with a defense of traditional Catholic natural law theory as articulated by St. Thomas Aquinas. Jensen offers the best answers in the contemporary Catholic academic world to a long-standing problem of how best to respond to critiques of Catholic natural law theory, especially as regards the supposed problem of deriving moral duties from a knowledge of the natures of things.

The new commercial freezer and electrical equipment at The Window.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

A principios de este año anunciamos una nueva iniciativa llamada Colaboración Comunitaria San Juan, por la cual buscamos su ayuda para determinar cómo San Juan puede devolver a nuestra comunidad local. Esta iniciativa responde a una meta establecida por nuestro Consejo De Finanzas parroquial para practicar lo que predicamos – devolver el 10 por ciento de nuestros ingresos al Señor, a quien reconocemos toda la fuente de todo lo que recibimos. Ya devolvemos el seis por ciento a la labor caritativa de la Iglesia a través de nuestra Diócesis, y estamos trabajando para asignar un cuatro por ciento adicional de nuestros ingresos de ofrenda a causas caritativas locales (comenzando con el uno por ciento este año). Procurando involucrar a más feligreses en este proceso, alentamos a los feligreses a nominar a organizaciones que creían dignas de nuestro apoyo. Solo recibimos dos nominaciones, pero ambas fueron excelentes y el Consejo de Finanzas de la parroquia se emocionó en apoyarl a ambas. Mientras sentía cierta incertidumbre sobre si debíamos seguir adelante con esta iniciativa mientras la parroquia experimentaba una disminución de los ingresos, nuestro Consejo de Finanzas fue firme en que debíamos cumplir con este compromiso. Definitivamente creo que tomaron la decisión correcta.

Nuestro primer nominado fue The Window, que apoya a los necesitados con alimentos, ropa y otros recursos. Hablando de nuestro Consejo de Finanzas parroquial, me complace que John Acosta haya aceptado ser el próximo presidente de nuestro Consejo de Finanzas. Cuando llegué a San Juan no había ningún presidente designado de este consejo y el pastor sirvió como presidente. El liderazgo laico es importante para la iglesia, especialmente con respecto a nuestras finanzas parroquiales, por lo que era importante para mí que aumentemos el liderazgo laico en esta importante área de supervisión financiera. John y su familia han sido parte de San Juan durante mucho tiempo. El es bilingüe y tiene raíces tanto en nuestras comunidades anglo e hispana. Su padre, Juan Acosta, sirvió con el diácono Ricardo Medina en la primera iniciativa del ministerio hispano en nuestra parroquia. John ha servido en el pasado en nuestro Consejo Escolar y con Caballeros de Colón. Es el Presidente del Seguro Acosta Insurance. Su liderazgo y habilidad financiera serán un gran ventaja para nuestro Consejo de Finanzas en el futuro.
